Expectations
EXPECTATIONS AP FRENCH 2023-2024
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS IN THE WORLD LANGUAGES CLASSES:
Students are expected to come to class on time and prepared with materials for class, to respect the teacher and fellow classmates, to participate during class, and to seek extra help (if needed) during CavBlock.
You should be on time, in your seat at the start of the period with your French material, and ready to work. I will mark you late unexcused if you come late to class without a pass. We will often have an activity that will be done right at the beginning of class.
Each student is responsible for him/herself including their missed work or future work they may be missing due to an expected absence.
All students are expected to make up their work as soon as possible. When a student is back to school after an excused absence, project, test, and quiz should be made up within 3 school days.
After an extended excused absence, students should meet with the teacher to discuss a plan to make up missing assignments.
Late-submitted formative assignments are accepted within 3 days late. ALL late assignments will be penalized.
Late-submitted summative assignments are accepted within 3 days late with a communicated reason. ALL late assignments will be penalized.
For the students’ benefit, a “0” will be entered for any missing assignment and will be replaced upon completion with an appropriate grade.
All students are expected to be a member of our class’ Google Classroom and to check it at least once a day.
All students will use THEIR SCHOOL EMAIL to communicate with the teacher.
All students will use GOOGLE CLASSROOM to access and submit an electronic assignment.
Many assignments will be submitted on GOOGLE CLASSROOM unless otherwise specified (Flipgrid, Padlet, Voki, Voces, etc.)
The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all students. As a result, no additional work (i.e. extra credit) is offered.
There will be NO retake tests or quizzes offered.
We learn through practice - we practice everyday - therefore, class attendance is very important.
Class participation is essential - it makes the class more fun and interesting.
Obviously, one of the most important things to keep in mind is that we need to respect one another.
We will do a lot of group activities (small and large) so working well with others, being motivated, and being supportive will create a positive environment.
Only one person will speak at a time.
Everyone will follow all school rules at all times- SEE Students Handbook
Electronic Devices: If you use your CELL PHONE during class WITHOUT my permission, it will be taken away from you! The student will turn off the cell phone and put it on my desk until the end of class. If this becomes a persistent issue, the cell phone will be locked in my desk’s drawer and the student will get it back at the end of the day. If this becomes a difficult issue, a parent or a guardian will be contacted.
We are in a fairly new building - it is very nice and I’m sure we all want it to stay that way so we will not write on or damage any equipment or property.
You should also expect to speak, write, listen, and read often. We will do a lot of speaking, and remember, this is a French class so we will speak French and you’ll hear a lot of French! We all make mistakes; I make them as well - and I am a native French speaker! Don't forget, we all learn from our mistakes. Effort is what is important - effort leads to proficiency.
It is also important that you understand that I am here for you. I am willing to do whatever is necessary to help you. If you need extra help during CAVBlock or if you just want to talk about the class or anything else I can help you with.
Finally, the most important thing is to work your best, I especially value excellent work ethic. It is also important to have a good time when learning, so let's have FUN! French is a wonderful language and we will do a variety of activities to keep the class interesting. With that said, let's work together to have a great, successful year!
PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is a particular point of emphasis in the foreign language department, as online translators/native speakers are a tempting option.
Intentional & unintentional plagiarism will not be tolerated.
This is a recommended website by the department: http://wordreference.com/. Mme Faucher rarely allows students to use this website during class; she prefers when students use a French/English dictionary from her classroom. You can use this website when you are home to complete an assignment you did not finish during class time.
What’s so bad about Google Translate anyway? By Elisa Kirschhoffer- PLEASE READ!!!
For in class written assignments, students will be asked to use an old fashion French-English dictionary provided by the teacher.
AP FRENCH SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS:
All students need a binder with loose lined paper for their notes, list of vocabulary, grammar information, handouts, rough drafts, practice activities, etc.
A Weekly Agenda will be posted in Google Classroom at the end of each week. Students should check the Agenda daily to see what we are doing in class and what’s assigned.
ALL important documents will be linked on the Weekly Agenda to give students easy access to all handouts with activities and information.
Most handouts will be electronic copies that ALL students will be able to find in their French II Google Classroom.
When students read a novel, an article, a poem, etc. for EACH reading activity, students will write their own vocabulary list. They will write the English meanings of each word, phrase or expression as well. A list of vocabulary will also be provided.
For the vocabulary/grammar learned, students should make flashcards- “des cartes mémoires” to help them study and retain the vocabulary. Using Quizlet to study vocabulary is also recommended.
There will be quizzes and tests. Those will be mainly on paper and some might be Google Forms. NO NOTES will be allowed and NO RETAKES!
Students should use the study guide and/or quiz/test format in Google Classroom to help prepare and study for a quiz/test.
Most graded writen assignments will be on paper. NO ELECTRONIC devices will be allowed to complete those assignments.
Enough class time will be allotted to complete most assignments. Most assignments can be done during class time when the time provided is well managed by students.
ALL students can always use CAVBlock time to complete assignments.
The midterm will likely be project based with a presentation. No final exam for AP students but a final project to finish the school year and it will be a summative assignment for quarter 4. Students will receive an EX (excused) for the final exam grade.
Activities in MyFrenchLab for Grammar and Vocabulary are practices and will often be assigned as formative assignments-homework/classwork.
Students will have lots of AP exam type of activities throughout the school year. Most of them won’t be graded as they are practice activities. They will be considered as class participation.
Because of the time spent practicing the AP French Exam, there won’t be many graded assignments entered in PowerSchool. When students have a grade going in PowerSchool, it will have a big impact on their overall grade.
