The State of the World Today

INTRODUCTION

Today we will discuss the state of the world today. We will start class with a writing assessment (one paragraph based on your research that will not count for a grade). I will use this to get an initial idea of how well you write. We will also begin to learn about my expectations during class discussions and be introduced to the Cornell note taking system.

Question of the Day

Why are people and societies in the regions we identified last class similar in certain ways but very different in others?

Focus Questions

  • How are the societies in each region governed?

  • What are the dominant religions in each region?

  • What are the key features of the economies of each region?

  • What is globalization and how are the people in each region affected by it?

  • What are some of the key problems/conflicts in each region?

WHAT IS DUE TODAY?

Have a Word document prepared with your answers to the questions we started during last class. Be able to quote the sources of your information. Having a hyperlink to the sources from your answers to use during our discussion will be helpful.

ASSESSMENTS AND ACTIVITIES

  1. We will begin class with a discussion, focusing on the questions in the introduction above. In addition to trying to make sense of what is happening in our world today, I will use this as an opportunity to teach you about my expectations of you in class discussions.

  2. Then we will read a short excerpt from the "Acknowledgments" section of Charles Kupchan's book No One's World. You can find this on Blackboard (Reading #1). You will use the Cornell note taking method to take notes on the reading. I will use this as an opportunity to teach you about my expectations in regard to Cornell notes.

WHAT IS DUE NEXT CLASS?

Please finish the reading and notes at home and bring them to next class.
