Marching band students are working on music for the upcoming homecoming football game.  The students will be performing the following new tunes:  "Go U Northwestern", "One Shining Moment", and "Don't Stop Believin'".   Please remember to click on the marching band page for practices for the fall marching season.  Students are also working on the memorization of the selection:  "Canzon".

All the band students gave amazing performances despite the heat for Graduation and Memorial Day.

Another great weekend for the Roland-Story band!  The Marching Band performed in front of thousands at the Pella Tulip Time parade on Friday and the Concert Band earned a division 1 rating at the IHSMA Large Group festival which was held at Woodward-Granger High School on Saturday.  Roland-Story was one of only three Class 2A schools at the Woodward-Granger site to receive division 1 ratings from all three judges.  Roland-Story is the only Class 2A school from the SCIBA district to receive division 1 ratings from all judges the past three years!  The concert band performed the following two selections at large-group:  "Devonshire Overture" by Ployhar and "Ross Roy" by Jacob de Haan.

Congrats to everyone on their performance at the Spring Concert.  The concert band performed the following selections:  "Devonshire Overture", "The Star Wars Epic - Part II", "Play", "Ross Roy" and "The Stars And Stripes Forever".  Thanks to the students that performed their contest selections.  The jazz band performed selections from their performance at IJC from April along with "Caravan" and "Rev. Jack".

Thanks to everyone that helped to make the solo/ensemble festival a great day!  Roland-Story High School students performed in the IHSMA solo/ensemble festival held at Ogden on Saturday, April 7.  R-S students gave many outstanding performances during the festival.  Roland-Story had the following results:  24 division I ratings, 6 division II ratings, and no division III, IV or V ratings.  Roland-Story also had two perfect ballots and a french horn solo that was chosen as outstanding in the center.  The past eleven years Roland-Story has achieved the following ratings:  192 division I ratings, 62 division II ratings, 1 division III rating and no division IV or V ratings.  Schools participating in the festival included the following:  ACGC, Des Moines Christian, Earlham, Madrid, Ogden, Panorama, Roland-Story, South Hamilton, Southeast Valley, Van Meter,  West Central Valley, and Woodward-Granger.

R-S performed at ISU in Ames at the Iowa Jazz Championships in April.  R-S has made it to IJC sixteen years in a row, which is a huge accomplishment.  We have been blessed with so many great musicians through the years.  Roland-Story finished in 6th place for the fourth time.  The band did a super job on all parts of the ballot sheet which includes:  ensemble, rhythm section, style, solos, and programming.  Our stage presentation was superb.  We had two students selected as outstanding performers.  They played the trumpet and bass/piano.  Congrats to our piano player on being chosen as the Class 2A All-State piano player!

Thanks to the jazz students for being flexible with the practice schedule this week due to snow and ice.  The band competed in Cedar Rapids at the Coe Jazz Summit.  Approximately ninety bands from all across Iowa attending the jazz festival.  R-S finished in 3rd place and had the overall outstanding musician for class 2A for the first time ever at the contest.  Congratulations to our piano player on being an outstanding soloist.

The jazz band had a great week of practice leading up to their performance at the Tallcorn Jazz Festival held at UNI.  The band performed in the 2A-3A and center and finished in 1st place in Class 2A and 2nd out of fifteen bands overall in the center.  This was the sixth time that Roland-Story finished in first place.  The other years were 2017, 2015, 2012, 2009, and 2008.  R-S has placed in the top three at UNI eleven times since 2005.  Tallcorn outstanding solo awards went to our alto sax, trombone, and piano musicians.  Our piano player was chosen as the overall outstanding soloist in Class 2A.

Way to go band members for your preparation for the February concert.  Everyone did an amazing with posture and horn position in the concert. The concert band students performed magnificently on the following selections:  "A Childhood Remembered", "Devonshire Overture", "Solas Ane", and "River Of Life".  The jazz band concluded the night performing their charts that they performed at the IHSMA Jazz Festival, which included the following:  "Time After Time", "Grease Wheezer", "You Left This", and "La Llama Azul".

The R-S jazz band received many solo awards at the SEP JazzFest held in Altoona.  Outstanding performer awards were presented to the saxophone section, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet (2), piano, and bass.  R-S finished in second place at the festival.

Students are preparing their music for the upcoming February concert.  All music must be passed before the concert!  We will be performing four selections in concert band:  "A Childhood Remembered", "Devonshire Overture", "River Of Life", and "Solas Ane".

The jazz band gave two stellar  performances in January.  R-S competed at the Triton Jazz Festival in Fort Dodge for the second time and finished in first place out of ten Class 2A bands.  Solo awards were presented to the following performers:  alto sax, trombone, and piano.  R-S Jazz received a division I rating at the Iowa High School Music Association Jazz Festival held at Marshalltown.  This was the seventeenth straight year that R-S was awarded a division I rating.  The band had the 3rd highest overall score in school history.

Five outstanding selections were performed by the concert band at the Winter Concert.  The students performed the following music selections:  "O Come All Ye Faithful", "Polar Express", "All I Want For Christmas", "Christmas Angels", and "Santa's Journey".

The jazz band has qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championships for the sixteenth consecutive year! The R-S Jazz Band finished in second place at the SCIBA Jazz Festival which was held at Winterset on Saturday, December 9th. The Iowa Jazz Championships will take place in Ames at ISU on Thursday, April 5.  Please come to Ames at ISU in April to hear a another great R-S jazz band.  Roland-Story received four outstanding solo awards on the following instruments:  tenor sax, trombone, piano, and bass.

Congratulations to the RSCG on finishing in 2nd place in Class 1 Color Guard at the ISDTA championships which were held in Des Moines on Friday, December 5.  Roland-Story tied for the fourth highest overall point total of any color guard squad regardless of class.  The guard gave another magical performance in Des Moines! The color guard performed to the music selection "Standing The Storm" by William Joseph.  The color guard has now finished in the top 5 of their class for the last fourteen years in a row!

Five color guard students participated in the ISDTA solo competition held at Newton.  All five students received division I ratings.  For the first time R-S had three students in the top seven of Class 1 Color Guard for all of Iowa.  Everyone had an amazing performance!

All of the band students did an amazing job performing in the last home football game.  We had very little time on the football field due to the conditions of the field.  The students performed music from Billy Joel.  The selections included the following:  "We Didn't Start The Fire/Piano Man", "My Life/Only The Good Die Young", and "Just The Way You Are".

Thanks to the band students on their preparation for the Dike-New Hartford football game.  Unfortunately we did not march because of the rain.

Congratulations to R-S Norse Marching Band on their first place finish for the eleventh consecutive year at the Carroll Band Days Parade in Class 2A.  The band received 111 points out of a total of 120 points.  The color guard also repeated as the top color guard overall for the ninth straight year.  The students did a great job on improving their score from the previous week.

The Norse Marching Band students did a great job at the Oktemberfest Parade held in Marshalltown.  The band finished in 1st place in Class 2A and had the highest overall score at the competition.  I'm very proud how all of the new students did in their first competition.

Thanks to all the band students on an amazing school year!
