Students are busy preparing for the Spring Concert.  We will be sharing the concert with Wartburg College from Waverly, Iowa.  This is a very neat opportunity for our band students to hear this fine college band perform on our stage.  The concert is Tuesday, April 30th at 7:00.  Please come early as we expect a huge crowd.  The order for the concert will be the R-S Jazz Band, Wartburg College, and last the R-S Concert Band.  We will also have performances from the IHSMA solo/ensemble festival on alto sax and clarinet duet during this concert!

R-S performed at ISU in Ames at the Iowa Jazz Championships on April 2nd.  This marked the seventeenth straight year of making IJC, which is a huge accomplishment.  We have been blessed with so many great musicians through the years.  Roland-Story finished in 5th place for the second time.  The band did a super job on all parts of the ballot sheet which includes:  ensemble, rhythm section, style, solos, and programming.  Our stage presentation as always was superb.  We had two students selected as outstanding performers.  They played the saxophone and piano.  Congrats to our piano player on being chosen as one of the top four soloists in Class 2A.

Thanks to everyone that helped to make the solo/ensemble festival a great day!  Roland-Story High School students performed in the IHSMA solo/ensemble festival held at Dike-New Hartford on Saturday, March 30.  R-S students gave many outstanding performances during the festival.  Roland-Story had the following results:  17 division I ratings, 13 division II ratings, 1 division III,  and no division IV or V ratings.  Roland-Story also had two perfect ballots and an alto saxophone solo that was chosen as outstanding in the center.  The past twelve years Roland-Story has achieved the following ratings:  226 division I ratings, 75 division II ratings, 3 division III rating and no division IV or V ratings.  Schools participating in the festival included the following:  Aplington-Parkersburg, Cedar Valley Catholic, Denver, Dike-New Hartford, Hudson, Jesup, Roland-Story, South Hamilton, South Hardin, and Union

Thanks to the jazz students for being flexible with the practices the last two weeks due to many inches of snow.  The band competed in Cedar Rapids at the Coe Jazz Summit.  Approximately ninety bands from all across Iowa attending the jazz festival.  R-S finished in 3rd place and our piano/bass player was chosen as an outstanding musician.

The jazz kids had another fun day at the UNI Tallcorn Jazz Festival performing in the beautiful Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center..  A total of fifteen Class 2A bands participated in the festival.  R-S finished in 1st place for the 3rd consecutive year and seventh time overall.  Congrats to our piano/bass player for being chosen as the overall top soloist in Class 2A for the second consecutive year.  R-S also had a student receive and outstanding solo award on alto sax.  We also had a great clinic to finish our day by learning more about jazz.

Thanks to all of the band students on their preparation for the February concert and for doing the performance on a Sunday afternoon due to a snowstorm earlier in the week.  The concert band performed:  "Ascend" by Hazo, "Rise Of The Silver City" by Galante, "Pacific Dreams" by de Haan, and "The Chimes Of Liberty" by Goldman, arranged by Schissel.  The jazz band performed:  "Not Yet Over The Hill" by Taylor, "Chicken Scratch" by Berg, "Body And Soul" arranged by Paich, and "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise" arranged by Rivello.

The R-S jazz band received many solo awards at the SEP JazzFest held in Altoona.  Outstanding performer awards were presented to the saxophone section, trumpet section, rhythm section, alto saxophone (2), tenor saxophone, trumpet, piano, and guitar.  R-S finished in first place at the festival for the fifth time in six years.

The jazz band gave two stellar  performances in January.  R-S competed at the Triton Jazz Festival held at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge for the third time and finished in first place out of eleven Class 2A bands.  Solo awards were presented to the following performers:  alto sax, piano, bass, and timbales.  R-S Jazz received a division I rating at the Iowa High School Music Association Jazz Festival held at Marshalltown.  This was the 18th straight year that R-S was awarded a division I rating.  The band had a high score of 49 out of 50 points from one of the judges.

The concert band students had an amazing Winter Concert performance.  The band played the following five music selections:  "Sparkling Lights", "Christmas On Broadway", "We Three Kings", "And Heaven And Nature Ring!", and "A Touch Of Christmas".  Thanks to all of the individuals that worked with the concert band to help the students prepare the music!

The jazz band has qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championships for the seventeenth consecutive year! The R-S Jazz Band finished in first place at the SCIBA Jazz Festival for the tenth time in the last thirteen years.  The festival was held at Winterset on Saturday, December 8th. The Iowa Jazz Championships will take place in Ames at ISU on Tuesday, April 2.  Roland-Story will be the first band to compete on that day.  Our performance time will be 1:15PM.   Please come to Ames at ISU in April to hear a another great R-S jazz band.  R-S had six students receive outstanding solo awards on the following instruments:  alto sax, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, piano/bass, and guitar.

The Roland-Story Color Guard was awarded the 2019 ISDTA Sportsmanship Award sponsored by Mark's  Dancewear.  R-S was chosen out of over 250 high school teams!

The guard gave another magical performance in Des Moines at ISDTA!  Congratulations to the RSCG on finishing in 2nd place in Class 1 Color Guard at the ISDTA championships which were held in Des Moines on Friday, November 30.  This marked the eighth time that Roland-Story finished in 2nd place.  R-S finished in 1st place in the 2014 and 2015 team competitions.  Roland-Story tied for the fifth highest overall point total of any color guard squad regardless of class this year.  The color guard performed to the music selection "Carol Of The Bells" by Lindsey Sterling.  The RSCG has now finished in the top 5 of their class for fifteen years in a row!

Six color guard students participated in the ISDTA solo competition held at Newton.  All six students received division I ratings.  For the second time in school history R-S had the state champion in Class 1 Color Guard for all of Iowa.  The other year was 2014.  All six students had performances that were amazing!

Congratulations to R-S Norse Marching Band on their first place finish for the 12th consecutive year at the Carroll Band Days Parade in Class 2A.  The band received 116 points out of a total of 120 points.  The marching band finished 1st overall for the ninth time in ten years and the color guard repeated as the top color guard overall for the tenth straight year.  Thanks to everyone for passing their music last week!

All the band students gave amazing performances despite the heat for Graduation and Memorial Day.

Another great weekend for the Roland-Story band!  The Marching Band performed in front of thousands at the Pella Tulip Time parade on Friday and the Concert Band earned a division 1 rating at the IHSMA Large Group festival which was held at Woodward-Granger High School on Saturday.  Roland-Story was one of only three Class 2A schools at the Woodward-Granger site to receive division 1 ratings from all three judges.  Roland-Story is the only Class 2A school from the SCIBA district to receive division 1 ratings from all judges the past three years!  The concert band performed the following two selections at large-group:  "Devonshire Overture" by Ployhar and "Ross Roy" by Jacob de Haan.

Congrats to everyone on their performance at the Spring Concert.  The concert band performed the following selections:  "Devonshire Overture", "The Star Wars Epic - Part II", "Play", "Ross Roy" and "The Stars And Stripes Forever".  Thanks to the students that performed their contest selections.  The jazz band performed selections from their performance at IJC from April along with "Caravan" and "Rev.
