Students will be getting ready for the first home football game versus Nevada.  We will be performing the following:  "Nevada School Song", "RS School Song", "Star Spangled Banner", "Jump", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", and "El Tigre".  Thanks to everyone for doing a super job during marching band camp!

Thank you to all of the high school band students for doing a fantastic job on six assignments that we had for required learning.  I am so proud of each and everyone of you for doing a great job of finishing the 2020 school year.  Congrats to the senior class for their accomplishments the last four years in band and for their leadership this school year!

Congratulations to the R-S Jazz Band on finishing in 1st place at the 49th annual Hoover Jazz Festival held at Des Moines Hoover High School on March 7.  R-S received outstanding performer solo awards on the following instruments:  flute, alto saxophone, trumpet, guitar, and drum set.  Our lead alto sax player received the All-Star award for being selected as the top saxophone performer of the day in Class 2A.

The jazz kids had another fun day performing at the UNI Tallcorn Jazz Festival performing in the beautiful Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.  A total of eleven Class 2A bands participated in the festival.  R-S finished in 1st place for the 4th consecutive year and eighth time overall.  Congrats to our alto sax soloist for being chosen as the overall top soloist in Class 2A.  R-S had outstanding solo awards on alto sax, tenor sax, flugelhorn, trumpet, and guitar.  We also had a great clinic to finish our day by learning more about jazz.

The R-S jazz band received many solo awards at the SEP JazzFest held in Altoona.  Outstanding performer awards were presented to the students on flute, alto saxophone, trumpet (2), guitar, and drum set.  R-S finished in third place at the festival and top three for the seventh consecutive year.

Thanks to all of the band students on passing their music for the February concert and for doing the performance on a make-up night due to a snowstorm the previous week.  The concert band performed:  "Awakening Hills" by Richard Saucedo, "A Disneyland Celebration"arranged by Michael Brown, "Ireland: Of Legend And Lore" by Robert W. Smith, and a Sousa march "The Thunderer" arranged by Jay Bocook.

The jazz band gave two stellar  performances in January.  R-S competed at the Triton Jazz Festival held at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge for the fourth time and finished in first place out of thirteen Class 2A bands.  Solo awards were presented to the following performers:  flute, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, flugelhorn, trumpet, guitar, and drum set.  R-S had scores of 90 and above from all three judges.  R-S Jazz received a division I rating from all three judges at the Iowa High School Music Association Jazz Festival held at Marshalltown.  This was the 19th straight year that R-S was awarded a division I rating.  The band had scores of 45, 47, and 47 out of 50 possible points.

The concert band students had an amazing Winter Concert performance.  The band played the following five music selections:  "Angels We Have Heard On High", "I Saw Three Ships", "A Fireside Christmas", "Snow Day Celebration", and "Christmas Festival".  Thanks to all of the band students for passing their concert band music.

The jazz band has qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championships for the eightteenth consecutive year! The R-S Jazz Band finished in first place at the SCIBA Jazz Festival for the eleventh time in the last fouteen years.  The festival was held at Winterset on Saturday, December 14th. The Iowa Jazz Championships will take place in Ames at ISU on Tuesday, April 7.  Please come to Ames at ISU in April to hear a another great R-S jazz band.  R-S had three students receive outstanding solo awards on the following instruments:  alto sax, guitar, and drum set.

The guard gave another magical performance in Des Moines at ISDTA!  Congratulations to the RSCG on finishing in 2nd place in Class 1 Color Guard at the ISDTA championships which were held in Des Moines on Friday, December 6.  This marked the ninth time that Roland-Story finished in 2nd place.  R-S finished in 1st place in the 2014 and 2015 team competitions.  Roland-Story had the ninth highest overall point total of any color guard squad regardless of class this year.  The color guard performed to the music selection "Imagination".  The RSCG has now finished in the top 5 of their class for sixteen years in a row!

Five color guard students participated in the ISDTA solo competition held at Newton.  Two seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore competed at the competition.   All five students had performances that were amazing!

Four students participated in the Iowa High School Music Association All-State tryouts in Indianola. Each student did a fabulous job in preparing their solo, etudes, and scales for the tryouts.  Congratulations to our junior french horn student on being selected 2nd alternate for the 2019 All-State band.

Congratulations to the marching band on their 1st place finish for the fourteenth time at the Marshalltown Oktemberfest celebration.  The marching band finished in 1st place overall.  The marching band did not perform this past year at the Carroll Band Days Parade as it was canceled due to heavy rain.

Thanks to all the band students on an wonderful 2018-2019 school year!

All the band students did a magnificent job in the Memorial Day Service and the Scandinavian Days Parade.  Thanks to all of the graduated seniors for participating in these two events.

Another great weekend for the Roland-Story band!  The Marching Band performed in front of thousands at the Pella Tulip Time parade on Friday and the Concert Band earned a division 1 rating at the IHSMA Large Group festival which was held at Woodward-Granger High School on Saturday.  All of the students in the high school band have received an overall division 1 rating in their high school career.   The concert band performed the following two selections at large-group:  "In My Perfect Place" by Leslie Gilreath and "Pacific Dreams" by Jacob de Haan.

Congrats to everyone on their performance at the Spring Concert.  The band shared the concert with the Wartburg College Wind Ensemble.  The concert band performed the following selections:  "In My Perfect Place", "Pacific Dreams", "Lion King Medley" and "Purple Pageant March".  Thanks to the students that performed their contest selections.  The jazz band performed selections from their performance at IJC from April along with "Sing A Song Of Songs" and "First Circle".

R-S performed at ISU in Ames at the Iowa Jazz Championships on April 2nd.  This marked the seventeenth straight year of making IJC, which is a huge accomplishment.  We have been blessed with so many great musicians through the years.  Roland-Story finished in 5th place for the second time.  The band did a super job on all parts of the ballot sheet which includes:  ensemble, rhythm section, style, solos, and programming.  Our stage presentation as always was superb.  We had two students selected as outstanding performers.  They played the saxophone and piano.  Congrats to our piano player on being chosen as one of the top four soloists in Class 2A.

Thanks to everyone that helped to make the solo/ensemble festival a great day!  Roland-Story High School students performed in the IHSMA solo/ensemble festival held at Dike-New Hartford on Saturday, March 30.  R-S students gave many outstanding performances during the festival.  Roland-Story had the following results:  17 division I ratings, 13 division II ratings, 1 division III,  and no division IV or V ratings.  Roland-Story also had two perfect ballots and an alto saxophone solo that was chosen as outstanding in the center.  The past twelve years Roland-Story has achieved the following ratings:  226 division I ratings, 75 division II ratings, 3 division III rating and no division IV or V ratings.  Schools participating in the festival included the following:  Aplington-Parkersburg, Cedar Valley Catholic, Denver, Dike-New Hartford, Hudson, Jesup, Roland-Story, South Hamilton, South Hardin, and Union

The Roland-Story Color Guard was awarded the 2019 ISDTA Sportsmanship Award sponsored by Mark's Dancewear.  R-S was chosen the best ou of over 250 high school teams.  This award is more important than any 1st place trophy that we have received at any contest.

Amazing!  The Roland-Story Jazz Band achieved the highest GPA of all Iowa High School music groups in the 2013 - 2014 and 2015-2016 school years according to the Iowa High School Music Association.
