Books As Mirrors ~ Books As Windows

Read Across America, an initiative sponsored by the National Education Association, was launched in 1998 as an annual reading motivation and awareness program.  Originally scheduled to celebrate and coincide with the birthday of early literacy advocate and author Dr. Seuss, the program has grown to include authors and genres from all walks of life! Beginning in 2021, RAA calls for "every child in every community to celebrate reading," with the theme Creating & Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers.  When children see themselves reflected in a book, they feel accepted and understood.  When children can get a glimpse into the life of another through reading, they develop empathy and understanding.  Check out the video below to see some of the RES students with books from our library as "Mirrors & Windows!" Also check out the "Who Is Behind the Book?" video where RES faculty, staff and support personnel are featured with a "mirror" book!
