About Mr. Wiegand

Hi Fourth Graders!

Hi Fourth Grade Family Members!

My name is Shane Wiegand. I will be your child’s fourth grade teacher at Sherman Elementary School! I am very excited to meet you! Let me tell you a little bit about myself and about what you can expect to do and learn in fourth grade.

I went to college at SUNY Geneseo. My undergraduate degree is in childhood education and in students with disabilities education. My master’s degree is in childhood multicultural education. This is my sixth year teaching fourth grade. I taught first grade for two years. I play the guitar and the ukulele. I also ride my bike to work instead of driving. You can expect rock out with a whole lot of music this year! I also love chess. I was the chess club coach at Sherman. I also love to read. My favorite fourth grade books include Harry Potter, Maniac Magee, The Big Friendly Giant, Matilda, and Crossover. I have been married for over 7 years! My wife and I enjoy hiking, volunteering and going for bike rides together.

This year we are going to learn and do a whole lot of great stuff! In my class I have a system I call ‘Mr. Wiegand’s Economy’. Everyone is assigned a job. Every other Friday you will get paid in Wiegand Dollars (money with my face on it). You will have the opportunity to use your Wiegand Dollars to purchase guitar lessons and chess lessons during lunch time. In social studies we will learn about the Native Americans, the European explorers, the Revolutionary War, and all about New York State. In science we will explore rocks and minerals, mystery matter, and owl pellets. In ELA we will read all kinds of interesting non-fiction texts and mind blowing fiction books! Finally, in math we will master multiplication, long division, fractions, and a ton of other cool math skills.

I do not assign a large amount of homework. Many nights we will have one page of math practice assigned. Homework shouldn’t take more then 10 or 15 minutes. If your child does not have their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts memorized I will be sending home flashcards and practice sheets to help them master their facts. I also expect students to read for 20 minutes each night, but I don’t require a reading log. If you’re child has an issue with the homework please shoot me a message on remind or email and I’ll go over it with them in class the next morning.

If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom please shoot me an email or a message on remind. We will need parent volunteers to help with some of our messy science and social studies projects.I would also love to have parents come in to read one on one with students.

I am looking forward to meeting you at curriculum night on September 25 from 5:30-6:15. Feel free to email me at swiegand@rhnet.org. Please sign up for email and text updates from me on Remind https://www.remind.com/join/34k7k8 I usually will respond to emails within one day.

I am looking forward to working you and your child this year! Your encouragement and support at home makes the learning we do at school possible.
