The Higher Power of Lucky

By

Susan Patron

Protagonist

Lucky Trimble is the protagonist of the novel. She is 10 years old and lives in the small town of Hard Pan, California. She lives with her guardian, Bridgette. Lucky’s mom died when she was younger and Lucky’s dad got his former wife, Bridgette to move from France and become Lucky’s guardian. Lucky wants to be a scientist when she grows up.

Antagonist

At first I thought the antagonist was Bridgette. It appears throughout the story that Bridgette is going to leave Lucky and go back to France. At the end of the story we know that this isn’t true but Lucky believed it to be true. I would have to say that Lucky is the antagonist as well as the protagonist because she jumps to conclusions about Bridgette without knowing the facts. It’s sort of ironic that she wants to be a scientist when she grows up.

Conflict

This is a person vs. themselves conflict. Lucky wants Bridgette to stay but she convinces herself that Bridgette wants to go back to France, so there is a conflict.

Setting

This story takes place in a small town in California during modern times. The setting is important because the town is way out in the dessert and very small and very poor. Everyone lives in trailers and one person lives in an old water tank. This makes Lucky believe all the more that Bridgette wishes to go back to France.

Plot

Lucky has a job cleaning up after meetings where she hears people talk about finding their “Higher Power”. Lucky feels that her life is out of control because she doesn’t know who will take care of her if Bridgette leaves. She wants to find her higher power so that she will have some control in her life. Lucky decides to run away so that the police will call her father and her father will talk to Bridgette about if she is going to continue to be Lucky’s guardian or not. Lucky runs away during a sandstorm.

Climax

The climax of the book is when Bridgette comes looking for Lucky. Lucky tells Bridgette why she was running away and Bridgette tells Lucky that she is not going to go back to France. Quite the opposite, Bridgette tells Lucky that she plans on officially adopting Lucky and she plans on opening a restaurant in the town of Hard Pan.

Outcome

At the end of the story Bridgette confirms her love for Lucky by telling her, “You know if anyone every hurt you I would rip their heart out.”

Theme

One possible theme is that, things are not always what they seem or you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. Bridgette appears to be moving back to France without Lucky but nothing could have been further from the truth
