Poetry

Poetry Unit

In our class we are starting a unit on poetry. We are using Sharon Creech's book 'Love that Dog' as a focal point. The main character in the story is a fourth grader learning about poetry. Each day he reads a famous poem and writes his own version of the poem. We are going to copy him! Each day we will write our inspired poems and post them to our google sites. Below I will post the poems that we do each day and a few exemplars from our class.

Black Cat

by: Christopher Myers

black cat, black cat

cousin to the concrete

creeping down our city streets

where do you live, where will we meet?

sauntering like rainwater down storm drains

between Cadillac tires and the curb

sipping water from fire hydrants

dancing to the banging beats of passing jeeps

ducking under the red circling of sirens cutting

through the night

Love That Boy

BY WALTER DEAN MYERS

Love that boy,

like a rabbit loves to run

I said I love that boy

like a rabbit loves to run

Love to call him in the morning

love to call him

"Hey there, son!"

He walk like his Grandpa,

Grins like his Uncle Ben.

I said he walk like his Grandpa,

And grins like his Uncle Ben.

Grins when he’s happy,

When he sad, he grins again.

His mama like to hold him,

Like to feed him cherry pie.

I said his mama like to hold him.

Like to feed him that cherry pie.

She can have him now,

I’ll get him by and by

He got long roads to walk down

Before the setting sun.

I said he got a long, long road to walk down

Before the setting sun.

He’ll be a long stride walker,

And a good man before he done.

The Pasture

BY ROBERT FROST

I'm going out to clean the pasture spring;

I'll only stop to rake the leaves away

(And wait to watch the water clear, I may):

I sha'n't be gone long.--You come too.

I'm going out to fetch the little calf

That's standing by the mother. It's so young,

It totters when she licks it with her tongue.

I sha'n't be gone long.--You come too.

Mason

I'm going out to clean Bases

Only stop to rake the back stop

For the lonely cop

Will you rake it too?

Going to get the ball

Rolling to the Master

The master is the Sportscaster

of B Ball

May 2

Brionna

I'm going out to play at my friend's house,

To make another Brionna and Jake Show.

And watch the show when it's shone, even though they all say no.

I WILL be gone long. --You come too.

I'm going outside to see if people are coming.

Oh look, one's coming now.

She's running, wow.

She's fast.

We retreat, into the house.

I WILL be gone long. --You come too.

The Outside

I'm going out to see the sunshine;

I'll go with my pink little bike

I want to go out that's what I like

I sha'n't be gone long.--You come too.

I'm going out to breathe the fresh air

I'll go out for a hike

I want to go out that's what I like

I sha'n't be gone long.--You come too

I'm going to Somalia this spring;

I'll only stop for the plane

My sister's are making me insane

I'm not going to be gone for long.- You come too

I'm going out to watch the clouds

Hey it looks like it's on the ground

Everyday I hear the beautiful sounds

Next time I go- You come too

Dog

by: Valeria Worth

Under a maple tree

The dog lies down,

Lolls his limp

Tongue, yawns,

Rests his long chin

Carefully between

Front paws;

Looks up, alert;

Chops, with heavy

Jaws, at a slow fly,

Blinks, rolls

On his side,

Sighs, closes

His eyes: sleeps

All afternoon

In his loose skin

Tyger Tyger, burning bright,

In the forests of the night;

What immortal hand or eye,

Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies.

Burnt the fire of thine eyes?

On what wings dare he aspire?

What the hand, dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,

Could twist the sinews of thy heart?

And when thy heart began to beat,

What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain,

In what furnace was thy brain?

What the anvil? what dread grasp,

Dare its deadly terrors clasp!

When the stars threw down their spears

And water'd heaven with their tears:

Did he smile his work to see?

Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger Tyger burning bright,

In the forests of the night:

What immortal hand or eye,

Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Shadow the Hedgehog speeding bright

in the darkness, of the night;

What immortal bike or fight,

Could explode this scary symmetry?

In what distant night or light.

Burnt the bombs, of his plight?

On what chaos dare he drive

what the bike, dare seize the fire?

And what arm, and what bike

could transform him to super shadow on the bike?

and when the heart began to beat

What dread bike? What dread feet?

What's the gun? In his hand,

In what furnace was a death band?

What the bike? what dread vroom

dare its deadly people lead them to doom.

When the bad guys threw their spears

and water that would make him die with tears:

Did he laugh his work too see?

Did he who made the god do thee?

Shadow the Hedgehog speeding bright

in the darkness, of the night;

What immortal bike or fight,

Could explode this scary symmetry?

Brionna's Robert Frost inspired poem

Brionna Dumais

Whose house this is I think I know

They live in this house though

They will not see me playing here

trying to climb the tree from the hammock

My brother must think it fun

to climb on the tree stumps

Between the road and house

The best day of the year

He gives a stick a shake

To say "I'm King"

The only other sound's the clang of pans

Of my grandma cooking

The yard is pretty, damp, and sunny.

But I have promises to keep

And miles to go before I sleep

And miles to go before I sleep

Whose Mushroom kingdom I think I know.

Her castle in the kingdom, though;

They will not see me stopping here

To watch her kingdom filled with grass.

My little kart must think it's queer

To stop without a racetrack here

Between the castle and the cannon

The lightest day of the year.

He gives his engine a loud roar

To say "you forgot to close my door."

The only other sounds a boom

Of a loud canon making Mario soar.

The kingdoms lovely light and sweet,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles and miles before I sleep,

And miles and miles before I sleep.
