Eugene C. Hargrove, as founder and editor of the journal Environmental Ethics, has for three decades been the principal figure in setting the context for the development of environmental philosophy. He is known especially for his research into the history of ideas behind environmental thought, such as aesthetic appreciation of nature in landscape and wildlife art. Hargrove has also been pivotal in graduate education in the field across his career, founding the first Ph.D. program in the world with a specific focus on environmental ethics.
