Third Grade students can sometimes be given a nightly homework assignments throughout the year. In addition there might be, Core Knowledge assignment, a writing piece that was not completed during school time, reviewing for tests, or other projects sent home. Sometimes these assignments/projects will require students to spend some time on Fridays and the weekends. They may count these assignments as a STAR when appropriate. Teachers expect students to turn in high quality work with all their thinking shown and written in complete sentences.
Nightly Math STAR
Students can circle a STAR for studying math facts or when homework is assigned. Students may be assigned Homework aligned with the lesson we learned that day.
**All work must be shown.
Nightly Spalding Spelling
STAR's can be circled for nightly spelling practice. Third Grade students are responsible for studying their 15 Wonder Curriculum words, 5 Spalding spelling words, and 2 Core Knowledge "Bonus Words" (a total of 22 words) at home each night. New spelling lists are introduced on Monday prior to Friday's test. Some third grade students may also benefit from reviewing their spalding phonograms at home for reinforcement.
Reading (Nightly Accelerated Reader) Mandatory 20 minutes per night!
Nightly: Your child is expected to spend at least 20 minutes reading an AR book in their level each night and recording this on their Homework Reading Log. A summary of what they read through out the week is due Friday with the Reading Log. This assignment has a direct correlation with their AR grade through the quarter. When students are dedicated to reading at home and follow through with their quizzes in the classroom they have the greatest success in reaching their AR points goal for the quarter.
