Getting an Instrument

Students provide many of the instruments used in band and orchestra. Our local music stores have rental programs where a percentage of your rental applies toward the cost of the instrument - a "rent to own" set-up. In addition, all middle schools have a limited number of some instruments that they can provide for students to use at little or no cost.

If you currently have an instrument - you SHOULD get it checked and repaired if necessary before the first class. Learning a new instrument can be a challenge which is only magnified when a student is trying to play an instrument that isn't working properly.  Boomer Music or Music and Arts can check any instrument, and Harry Williams can check any string instrument.

If you do not have an instrument - start by visiting a local music store to find out about their rent-to-own program.  If you feel that the instrument would be cost prohibitive, contact the director at the school your child will attend in the fall to find out what options they may have for you.  You MUST contact the director at the school you will attend in the fall to check on availability and to set up how/when to get the instrument.  DO NOT ASSUME THERE WILL BE AN INSTRUMENT FOR YOU AT THE SUMMER MUSIC CLASS

PSD Does not start students on oboe, bassoon or saxophone - students SHOULD NOT plan on playing any of these as part of the summer beginning program.

Percussion

The local music stores have a “percussion kit” which has a set of practice bells, practice pad, sticks, mallets and the appropriate music and equipment stands.  All percussion students are expected to provide their own percussion kit.
