Dear parents of PSD instrumental music students,

Thank you for choosing music for your student! The PSD Summer music program serves as both the beginning/introduction to playing band and orchestra instruments, and as an opportunity for students that have already played an instrument to continue to refine their skills. This summer program replaces 4th and 5th grade band and orchestra, which occur in many other school districts. As the restrictions needed because of the COVID pandemic become more manageable because of vaccinations and other safety improvements, we are planning on providing the summer music program for the summer of 2022.

Based on current PSD COVID requirements, our classes will be offered without any mandated requirements (vaccinations, masks, bell covers, etc.) If the Larimer Health district directs us, we may have to modify requirements in an effort to keep all our students safe. Should any changes occur, parents will be notified either via email or information sent home with students. The latest information can always be found on this web-site.

Our summer program typically has a fee associated with it. This fee is used to help us continue to provide great instruction to the students in PSD, and is kept solely for the instrumental music programs in PSD. Again this year, we will not be charging a fee for participation. Instead, we are asking for donations from families that can help out. Our normal fee is $50.00. To help everyone understand the expenses we typically face:

$50.00 covers the hourly pay for one teacher to teach 2 hours of summer music classes

$200.00 covers the cleaning and light repair of a school owned instrument such as a baritone or cello

$400.00 covers moderate repairs for school owned instruments like baritones, tubas and string basses

The Poudre School District Summer Music Program is open to any student currently in 5th grade through graduating seniors.

There are three levels of classes offered:

Beginning - Designed for students who have never played an instrument before. These classes are generally taken by students entering 6th grade in the fall, but from time to time older students will want to learn a second instrument - or may have missed joining band or orchestra as a 6th grader. We do not allow students younger than 5th grade (current grade) to participate without special allowance.

Intermediate - Designed for students that have played an instrument for 1 or 2 years - In general, students who will still be in middle school next year. From time to time, students who are going into 6th grade who have taken private lessons, or received other instruction are allowed to participate in the intermediate program.

Advanced - Designed for students that will be in high school next year - or for those students who have just graduated.(Note - because of construction projects at the comprehensive high schools, the advanced program will not be offered during the 2022 summer).

Classes are taught by professional music educators – often by the teachers students will have either in middle school or high school. For that reason, we recommend that students attend the site closest to their home school – students will not only get to know their future music teachers, but many of the students that will be in their band and orchestra classes in the fall.
