IMPORTANT UPDATE ON THE 2020 PSD SUMMER MUSIC PROGRAM

Dear parents of PSD instrumental music students,

Thank you for choosing music for your student!  In a typical year, secondary instrumental music students attend a Summer Music Program to begin or continue their instrumental studies; this replaces 4th and 5th grade band and orchestra, which occur in most other districts.  This year, there is a high degree of uncertainty regarding the situation with COVID-19 and necessary safety precautions.  After much discussion, our music teachers want to be certain that all students receive equitable instruction in the best environment possible.  In an effort to learn as much as possible about safety precautions, and to align with other PSD Summer programs, the PSD Music team has decided not to offer the Beginning and Intermediate Summer Music Programs this July/August.  The Instrumental Music Teachers are planning and researching the best ways to provide a safe learning environment involving activities like playing wind and brass instruments, and will think creatively to get all of the band and orchestra students up to speed during the beginning of the fall semester, in whatever learning environment we find ourselves.

If you have questions, please contact Melissa Flail at mflail@psdschools.org or 970-222-8007.

Thank you,

Melissa Flail and the PSD Music Team

Introduction

The Poudre School District Summer Music Program is open to any student currently in 5th grade through graduating seniors.

There are three levels of classes offered:

Beginning - Designed for students who have never played an instrument before.  These classes are generally taken by students entering 6th grade in the fall, but from time to time older students will want to learn a second instrument - or may have missed joining band or orchestra as a 6th grader.  We do not allow students younger than 5th grade (current grade) to participate without special allowance.

Intermediate - Designed for students that have played an instrument for 1 or 2 years - In general, students who will still be in middle school next year.  From time to time, students who are going into 6th grade who have taken private lessons, or received other instruction are allowed to participate in the intermediate program.

Advanced - Designed for students that will be in high school next year - or for those students who have just graduated.

Classes are taught by professional music educators – often by the teachers students will have either in middle school or high school.  For that reason, we recommend that students attend the site closest to their home school – students will not only get to know their future music teachers, but many of the students that will be in their band and orchestra classes in the fall.
