About Gifted Honors English

Students identified as academically gifted may enroll in the Gifted Honors English course, which offers both gifted programming components and high school English creditThe class has a seminar format which allows students to participate actively in their learning. The teacher serves as a facilitator, using the Socratic method to elicit critical inquiry. Instruction is often individualized to accommodate various learning styles and interests and to incorporate a variety of primary sources and community resources. 

This course extends on learning from the ALPHA and SIGMA programs and allows students to continue building skills in the following areas:
  •  critical and creative thinking
  •  problem solving
  • inquiry and research
  • oral and written communication
  • analytical reading and writing
  •  affective education and leadership

Sample curriculum activities for all levels of Gifted Honors English include:
  • creative and expository writing
  • literary analysis
  • debate and mock trial
  • Future Problem Solving
  • independent research
  • community action and service projects

Permission to enroll in and to continue in Gifted Honors English is based on student performance and teacher recommendation.
