GED NC010 - GED GED Language Arts
Description:
Prepares students for the GED Reasoning Through Language Arts exam. Topics include applying critical thinking skills to reading fiction and informational texts; reviewing language mechanics, grammar, vocabulary and editing skills; and writing extended response essays. Emphasis is also placed on developing test-taking strategies
Course Objectives:
Identify the main idea and draw inferences from fictional and informational text.
Recognize the author’s tone and point of view.
Edit text passages for grammar, mechanical, and organizational errors.
Write an organized, well-developed essay evaluating the relative strengths and weaknesses of two arguments.
Demonstrate test-taking skills needed to pass the GED Reasoning through Language Arts exam.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Compose sentences, paragraphs and short essays using appropriate parts of speech.
Express reasoned opinions about literary and informational texts in sentences, paragraphs, or essays.
Know how to compare and contrast concepts set out in informational texts dealing with issues addressed in common.
Determine the main ideas, inferences and figures of speech in texts requiring a 12th grade+ reading level.
Evaluate the strengths and or weaknesses of arguments encountered in literary or informational texts.
