Fun in the Library
Just Right Books - Use the 5 finger rule to find the book that is "just right for each student's reading level. Read Goldisocks and the 3 Libearians.
Book Bingo - Gd K-1 - Students lay out 3 paperback books like bingo cards. Words representing animals and objects are written on 3x5 cards, such as dog, boy, dinosaur, etc.
A card is chosen and read. The student having a book with a picture representing that word calls "bingo." Stickers are given as prizes.
Put the Book on the Shelf - Gd K-1 - Each student holds a book, each with a different author representing the letters of the alphabet. Letters are called in order and the students (pretending they are the books) line up "on the shelf," stading straight and tall, facing front, just like the books are placed on the shelves.
Book Buddies - Gd. K - Cards representing both and good images of how children should handle books are shown to students. Each student takes a turn telling the class whether or not the image on the card is an example of a "book budy."
Research This! - Gd 4-5 - Students have a list of questions to answer using reference books. Students work in teams of 2 or 3. First, second and third place winners recieve a prize.
Real or Not Real - Gd K-1 - Cards with pictures of real and imaginary characters are presented to students. Each student takes a turn telling the class if it is real or not real.
Fiction or Non-fiction - Gd 1-2 - Cards with pictures of fiction and non-fiction book covers are presented ot students. Each student takes a turn telling the class if the book is fiction or non-fiction. Books can be used instead of the cards.
Dewey Scavenger Hunt - Gd 4-5 - Students participate in a scavenger hunt finding the call numbers of books on different topics. Student write down the title of the book and the call numbers.
Read with a Furry Friend - K-2 - Bring in a variety of stuffed animals for students to choose from. Each student settles down around the floor of the library with a stuffed animal to read to.

What's Inside This Book? - Gd 1-2 - Have a "scavenger hunt" by dividing the class into teams and giving each team a copy of the same book. Make a list of objects, words, etc found in the book. Students should write down the page numbers where each clue can be found.
