Principles of Penn Strength Leadership
Create Want To’s
Penn Strength Athlete Standards
CONSISTENTLY BUY INTO THESE PRINCIPLES AND DISCUSS THEM WITH THE ATHLETES
WANT TO BAND CRITERIA:
85% Attendance After School Weights: This does not guarantee Want To status if athlete does not achieve #4
85% Championship Team Workout Attendance: This does not guarantee Want To status if athlete does not achieve #4
(If athlete is in season and cannot participate in above OPPORTUNITIES, then work ethic, leadership will dictate Want To status)
ABOVE ALL ELSE, ATHLETE MUST SHOW LEADERSHIP AND WORK ETHIC TO COACHES STANDARDS
Must not obtain In School or Out of School Suspension
Want To Bands can be taken away at the discretion of Strength Coach or Sports Coach
The approach to leadership is simple. Create a Team First atmosphere with athletes that have a Want To mentality. It is simpler said than done. In order to achieve this, we must first understand what a Want To is:
Want To’s: Athletes that “want to” succeed, achieve more, and be leaders. Show up because they “want to”.
Have To’s: Students that “have to” work out and be there because their coaches say so, and or others. They would not show up for any other reason.
“Can’t Do’s”: Students that have poor attendance, don’t act right, and are a negative influence to the program. Always use the word “Can’t”
Eliminate the Can’t Do’s and Have To’s in order to be successful.
Students that display traits of a Want To receive a wrist band with the words Want To on it.
Effect: More students want to work hard and do right in order to receive the wrist band. “Want To” status becomes similar to peer pressuring others that are doing wrong to start doing right.
If we can consistently remind and discuss this type of mentality then we will be successful. Each athlete has two types of motivation: Intrinsic or Fear. Intrinsically motivated athletes are the Want To’s of the team. The truly successful athlete is motivated by themselves through their goals, visions, etc. The fear comes from the coach. It is our job to teach our athletes the importance of being motivated intrinsically through their own Wants.
