Homework

Homework helps children in their academic success. It reinforces concepts that we learn in class. Your child should have a separate homework. Homework will be given on Mondays and needs to be returned in your child's homework folder the following Monday. If there is no school on Monday, it is due the next school day. Please be sure to review your child's homework for neatness and correctness. Fixing mistakes will ensure mastery of skills. Please support your child by creating an awareness of the proper answer and having your child fix mistakes.

Make sure your child understands the directions, and allow them to complete the homework independently, with your guidance if needed. Please do not do the homework FOR your child, including writing his/her name on the assignment. All homework is to be completed in pencil, and pictures should be colored with detail. Please reinforce proper pencil and scissor grip during homework time.

After you have checked the homework over with your child, please allow your child to put the homework in the homework folder. Then have your child put the homework folder in his/her backpack. Starting good homework and organizational habits cannot start too early. Developing excellent organizational habits now will really pay off later!

Here are a few homework tips that I have found to be useful with my own children:

Tip 1: Establish A Routine

What time will homework be completed each day? Where will your child sit to complete the assignments? Be consistent. After a while you will see your little one get out the homework and begin without you even having to remind him!

Tip 2: Encourage Your Child To Be An Independent Worker

Once you have helped your child to understand the directions of the assignment, let your kindergartner complete the work without you being right next to him/her! You will be happy you started this practice in Kindergarten. Believe me...it's no fun sitting with an 11th grader the whole time he/she is doing his/her calculus homework. Walk away! If your child needs help, they'll ask!

Tip 3: Help Your Child Develop Organizational SkillsAs I mentioned above, let your child be responsible for taking out the homework, delivering it to you to check, placing it back in the homework folder, and then placing the homework folder in his/her backpack. Also, having a box of supplies (pencils, crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks, and scissors) at the designated "homework" station will help your child stay on track.
