Your sketchbook is a visual diary, a place to develop technical skill, a place to plan your artwork, and a place to take notes for your art course. Keeping a sketchbook will make you more aware of your surroundings and increase your drawing skills. Your perception and abilities will improve with every drawing. Like any other skill, drawing takes PRACTICE. In addition to weekly assignments, you are encouraged to fill this space with your own work and drawings of your choice. Use your sketchbook as a place to let out your ideas and thoughts.
You should spend at least 30-45 minutes for each sketchbook assignment. You will have some opportunities to do some of the work in class if you finish early on a class assignment, but the sketchbook assignments are generally considered homework assignments.
Sketchbook assignments are due on Fridays following the course calendar schedule.
These assignments count as formative assessment grades, 30% of your quarter grade.
Tips:
Fill the entire page spread- not just the right or left page.
Avoid a centered, bullseye type composition (not just a small drawing in the middle of the page)
Have your drawing go beyond the edges of the page.
Always draw the background or environment (use of negative space)
Use full color or shading (media of your choice)
Effort of drawing- a 5 minute drawing looks like a 5 minute drawing. Your ability will only improve with effort.
Draw from life and your imagination.
Show an interesting and original point of view
Drawings should show experimentation and growth from one to the next.
