We will announce later when our first set of spelling words will be sent home.
How are spelling tests given in second grade?
Most test are given by students writing the word on as the teacher calls out the spelling word.
How are the words chosen that are in the sentence my child has to write on the test?
The curriculum prescribes the sentence that we ask students to write. Your child will NOT be able to prepare for the sentence at home. The sentence words are based on phonics and spelling patterns that we repeatedly work on in class during the weeks prior to each test. The best way for your child to prepare to write the sentence on the test is to pay attention and focus on the lessons in class.
The sentence is worth 10 points on each test. Capital letters, punctuation, and correct spelling of each word all are considered when grading the sentence.
Alphabetizing of Words on the Spelling Test:
Later in the year, students will be ask to alphabetize a few words on the back of the spelling test. The words will be written on the board and students will be asked to write the words in alphabetical order. This part of the test will also be included in your child's overall spelling test grade. Because the words will be spelled correctly on the board, students are expected to spell the words correctly on their papers.
