2023-2024 School Year:

Reading Skills News:

The first two weeks back to school, students will be working on reviewing sounds, placement tests, and the Dibels benchmark test.  Once these are completed, students will begin their first of six readers, "The Cat Bandit."

Skills Unit 6:   War of 1812 reader

Each unit will gradually increase in the text complexity and in reading levels. The best way to prepare for every reading test is for your child to read aloud to you each night for 15-20 minutes.

Reading books are not sent home.  However, the stories that we are working on at school can be found in the digital online readers that can be found on your students Amplify link.  To get to these readers, your child will need to sign-in to their "Classlink" homepage using their QuickCard QR card.  Then click on Amplify.  Once on Amplify, choose resources.  There are 6 skills readers.  Please do NOT read ahead.  We will also send home worksheets that have most, but not all, of the stories printed on them. We ask that you listen to your child read aloud to you each night the story that we have worked on in class that day.  Repeated reading of the same text over and over helps build fluent readers.

Assessments in Skills - Your child doesn't have to study for assessments in the skills strand.  The students will work daily with the teacher to prepare for assessments.  Reading with your child at home each day for 20 minutes is the best way to help at home.

Spelling News:

This week's list (Unit 6, Lesson 1) will be sent home in the Tuesday, April 31st folder with a test date of Monday, May 6.

The final list for the year will be sent home on Tuesday, May 7 and will be tested on Monday, May 13.

There are three ways to see the weekly list of spelling words:

1.  Spelling sheets will be sent home once words are assigned.

2.  Students will also write their spelling words in their planners on Friday for the next week.

3.  The words are also listed on this website under the clickable link "Spelling Words."

Students should plan on practicing their spelling words at home each week.

Yes/No Reading Sentence Fluency:

To help students practice fluency which includes reading speed along with comprehension, we will be practicing reading as many sentences as possible within one minute and answering if this sentence is true by circling the word "yes" or "no".   We are doing this because we have a state fluency standard that is tested on the TNReady test in the spring that is timed.  We want our students prepared and ready to do their personal best in the spring.  All sentences will be made up of words from completed reading stories, spelling words, and sight words that the students have used.  Sentences will grow more complex as the reading stories progress.

"Yes/No Fluency quizzes will be given randomly throughout the year.  If you are practicing at home along with our practice at school, students will do well.

Language News:

Students will begin their morning by completing  a "ELA Spiral"  practice sheet in class and will check this whole group in class with the teacher.  This is created by Putnam County.  While there will be no quizzes, students are expected to apply what they are learning to their everyday writing.

Language skills are also taught in the reading skills lessons daily.  This will include grammar, parts of speech, prefixes, suffixes, sentence structure, and paragraph writing to name a few.

Listening and Learning Knowledge News:

Domain 11 - Immigration

Students will listen as the teacher reads aloud a selection each day. Vocabulary will be introduced before each story and discussed during each lesson. At the end of each domain, students will be assessed on their listening skills. Students will not do anything to prepare for these assessments except to listen in class and participate in class discussions and writing activities that go along with these lessons.  Please encourage your child to be good listeners.

Math News:

Math Book

Currently:  Reteaching standards that show weaknesses for the grade level.

Tests will be given after every lesson which lasts 7-15 days each.   Please review the math stapled packets of work papers  that are sent home at the end of each chapter.  By reviewing these pages with your child, you will help your child prepare for tests.  These papers will be sent home a couple of days before the tests.

Math Daily Spiral Practice Packet

The county math coaches have created math spiral reviews for each grade level that we work on in class.  Look for these in your children's Tuesday folders to see the knowledge they are retaining or areas where your children may need extra help.

Timed Math Fluency Fact Quizzes

Two of our math standards are to fluently add and subtract within 30 from memory and to fluently add and subtract with and without regrouping within 100, and then 1,000.  To help students with this standard, we will be practicing certain groups of facts and quizzing those facts randomly after students have had sufficient time to practice.  Quizzes will have a time limit of 5 minutes.  Students will also need to practice their math facts at home to meet their goals with the practice sheets that we send home each week.  We will test over the sets of facts randomly after student have had adequate time to practice both at school and at home.  If students practice nightly with a timer, they will be ready for quizzes as they occur.  (TN 2.OA.B.2, TN 2.NBT.B.5, and TN 2.NBT.B.8)

Social Studies and Science:

The second grade standards for Social Studies and Science are taught in several ways. Many of our reading skills and knowledge stories cover these standards.  The standards that are not taught in our stories are taught separately through a variety of resources during the year.

Future Ready Classes

Every student in the school is assigned to a Future Ready Class during the day.  These classes were previously called Power Classes.   These classes are a time for teachers to work with students based on classroom data that shows specific deficits.
