Students will not receive a word list containing all the test words. Third Grade is using the Benchmark Spelling program. We will teach a lesson on one important spelling strategy that will be reinforced and applied each day of the week. We want the students to know the principle so they are able to apply it to multiple words using the strategy rather than just knowing one word. Students will not be given a word list to memorize for the test. On Fridays, we will be taking a test on that strategy seeing if our students know the strategy that was taught during the week. The test will consist of 20 words that review our weekly pattern.
At home, you can help your child learn the new strategy by doing the following:
- Practice the strategy with the word sort cards
- Show interest in your child’s word study by asking what activities were done in class and practice them at home
- Dictate words with the strategy to your student to help them recognize how to spell the word.
- Help your child notice the tricky parts in words.
- Help your child notice the letter patterns, or how words are the same or different.
- Show interest in words your child reads and writes recognizing that a word may be the strategy we are using in class.
- You are an important part in your child’s learning. Please know that what you do to support your child’s interest in and success with words will make an important difference in school.
Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions!
