Unit 1: Interpreting Characters: The Heart of the Story
In this unit, students will build substantial ideas that are grounded in evidence, to do this readers need to read deeply and with conscious intent. In third grade, students learned that what a character does or says in one part of a story will often connect with what happens in another part. In fourth grade, we build upon the third grade Character Studies by emphasizing text-based conclusions about characters, and then shifting focus from studying characters to building interpretations.
Unit 1: The Arc of the Story: Realistic Fiction
This unit is designed to develop writers that bring a writerly consciousness to literary texts. Students are expected to notice the choices an author has made and to reflect on the reasons an author may have had for his/her craft moves. In addition, students will use those skills in their own work. Students will lean heavily on their years of experience with narrative work and connect that learning to this new realistic fiction plan.

Unit 1: Addition, Subtraction, and Place Value
In this unit students generalize their understanding of place value by recognizing relationships among places (in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right), the value of each individual digit (the 3 in 654,321 is worth 300) and values within the whole number (there are 6543 hundreds in 654,321). Students also apply place value understanding to expanded notation and the rounding of numbers.
In this unit, students become fluent with the U. S. algorithms for addition and subtraction, and learn to select the most appropriate addition or subtraction strategy for the numbers in a given problem.
Input/Output: Human Brain
In this module students are introduced to the analogy of the brain as a computer. They explore the various inputs and outputs of the human body. Students discover how signals passing from cell to cell allow us to receive stimuli from the outside world, get this information to the brain for processing, and then send out a signal to generate a response. Students investigate how we take in information through the senses and where the information is processed in the brain. Additionally, students explore how the brain and body react to stimuli. Students work as part of a team to design, plan, and create a video or podcast to raise awareness about concussions and educate children as to how concussions can either be identified early or prevented all together. Students follow a design process, a step by step way to solve problems, to help develop their video or podcast.
