"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."
-Thomas Edison
Steps to take in order to help your child build resiliency:
1. Use growth mindset praise. Focus on phrases such as "I am so proud of how hard you just worked on that" or " I cannot believe how well you persevered through that challenging problem". Do not focus on praising them around how smart they are or being the best. This is when students tend to be afraid of failure.
2. You could model flexibility. Show your child throughout everyday life that it is important to roll with the punches even if our plans have to be tweaked. If they see you showing patience when things do not go as planned, it will be easier for them to do so when their schoolwork does not go as they had hoped because they have seen someone model this behavior.
3. Try to take the road at home where the "glass is half full" instead of the "glass being half empty". This lesson is important for them to learn not only for school, but the rest of their lives. Things will not always go our way so it is the way that we approach things that makes a difference between someone who has a fixed mindset and someone who has a growth mindset.
