Music and Emotional Expression
On September 11th, 2001, the power of music helped the UNCG Wind Ensemble students express the intense unspeakable things they were feeling. Since then, many of those students have shared that their performance of Eric Whitacre's "October" during rehearsal stands as one of the most powerful musical memories of their life. Where were you on that day? How has music helped you express intense feelings that can't easily be said?

Improvisation of Music
The classically trained Montero reports that picking out melodies by ear and improvising on them at the piano has been a part of her musical development since she was a child. Her concerts draw from a lot of standard piano repertoire (e.g., Chopin, Rachmaninoff), but at the end of the show she likes to improvise based on the musical vernacular of her audience. This video is from a 2007 end-of-concert improvisation session in Koln, Germany. She starts by asking the audience, "Let's do something traditionally from Koln". Once they finally agree on a tune for her (EVERYBODY sings!), she offers them a new take on a traditional melody.
Also, check out this link to learn about Gabriela Montero's approach to improvisation with a 60s classic Rock song, "The Weight" by The Band. From NPR's "Performance Today" with Fred Child (2007).
