Ch. 31 - American Modernism

There are three different music ideas offered in "The Unanswered Question" (1908, but it wasn't performed in public until 1946). The first music idea is titled, "The Silence of the Druids" and is represented by slow, quiet strings who remain in the background throughout the piece. The next music idea is represented by a solo trumpet who poses "The Perennial Question of Existence", to which woodwind quartet of "Fighting Answerers" attempts to answer the trumpet's question. All three musical groups are placed separately on the stage and perform with independent tempos from each other.
