Typical Projects
We're keeping this page from Winter 2020 up to give you an idea of the types of projects that EESS engages in during a typical term. Click here for information on Spring 2024 projects.
If you're looking for someone to contact about a project, you can find our list of officers here.
The most up-to-date information for events is on our calendar.
EESS Projects and Field Trips:
Mentorship Program First-year students looking for opportunities to connect with a student mentor should contact michelle.white@oregonstate.edu to join the College of Engineering's program. Many of our officers have signed up as mentors there. You can also ask us questions by contacting any of our officers through email or coming to a meeting.
Aquaponics An aquaponics system can be used to produce fish and plants together. Water is pumped from a fish tank into planters, which it flows through before ending up back in the fish tank. The fish provide nutrients for the plants, and the plants filter the water for the fish! This term we are disassembling and modifying our cascading system and adding plants and fish to our new vertical system. We have regular work parties on Sundays at Weniger (see calendar for details). Come join us! It's fun, you can join at any time, and there's no experience necessary!
Agrivoltaics Agrivoltaics is the practice of putting crops and solar panels on the same land. Evaporation off of the plants helps keep the solar panels cool and efficient. This term we're focusing our efforts on aquaponics to grow starts for the agrivoltaics plot. We'll also be thinking about planning for irrigation and tilling late in the term.
Greenhouse Our greenhouse on top of Weniger is awesome! If you want a tour, or you want to get involved with plant watering and fish feeding, email Eric, and let him know if there's something specific that you're interested in. (Eric's also the contact for general information and accommodations related to the greenhouse.) If you want to help out, we'll teach you anything you need to know!
Field Trip We're waiting for good weather in the Spring for our next field trip. However, we still have service projects planned for this term!
Guest Speakers
Service Projects Come join EESS and CEL on March 7 for Animal Action Day! We'll be maintaining a wetland for the numerous species that rely on it. See our calendar for more information!
Project Suggestions:
If you have a project or event you'd like to suggest to us, we'd love to hear from you! (Seriously, officers get really excited about funding projects.) You can email us, or just come talk to us after our next meeting. You don't need to have a complete plan or a lot of technical skill or anything. We promise to be nice!
