Homework will be minimal. Family time and unstructured play are very important. Rest and relaxation are also important. Participation in sports and clubs helps students stay healthy while developing their social skills, confidence, and responsibility.
What Will Homework Look Like?
Reading: Students are expected to read for at least 20 minutes a night to improve their reading comprehension, fluency, and word attack skills. This may be independent, with a parent, a sibling or another family member. Students may read their library books, children's magazines, non-fiction books, comic books, cook books, or favourite books from home!
Cursive Writing: New to the curriculum last year! I will be introducing letters and providing instruction at school. Students will be given opportunities to practice writing in cursive in class. You are welcome to assist students in their practice of cursive at home! I will occasionally send home some practice so you can see how your child is progressing.
Math: If parents wish, students can practice their numeracy skills at home with games and practice questions online. I will be using Knowledgehook and Mathletics to provide extra practice questions to students that are directly related to what we are learning in class and/or a preview of what we will be learning next. It is a great way for me to ensure I'm assigning relevant practice questions at the correct level for each student. Digital math practice also has the advantage of letting students know immediately if they made a mistake and helping guide them in the right direction when solving problems. If you prefer to sometimes have pencil-paper math practice at home, please let me know and I can email parents practice work and games that can be printed out. Math practice questions will not be taken up at school. However, if your child had difficulty with a question and would like to talk about it with me, they are always welcome! Students will be asked to study for upcoming Math assessments. Study materials will be shared in your child's Hapara Workspace for Math.
Science: I may occasionally ask for students to bring in a few items from home or outside in nature to help with a project we are completing in class. Students will be asked to study for upcoming Science assessments. Study materials will be shared in your child's Hapara Workspace for Science.
When appropriate, classwork that is not completed during the day at school will also be sent home for homework.
If I have observed that your child is struggling significantly in class, I will contact you and we can discuss the next steps. If you have any concerns about your child's progress at school, please contact me so we can make a plan together. Thanks for your support!
