The goal of ApREECE is to immerse participating undergraduate science and engineering students in active research environments tackling problems in electrical and computer engineering. The ten student participants will be divided into five groups and assigned to one of five ongoing research efforts based on student interest, background and abilities. Each group will be assigned a specific funded research problem to tackle. We strive to make the involvement in these modern research problems an enlightening and exciting experience for participating students.
Objectives
To provide students with long-term collegial relationships with research faculty and expert scientists from industry and other research organizations
To provide female and minority students as well as students from non-research/liberal arts institutions with an exciting research experience working on real-world problems
To increase student understanding of the nature of research and scientific reasoning
To improve the student participant's attitude toward careers in research and graduate studies in science and engineering related fields
To increase the student participants' knowledge in science and engineering and their role in solving practical problems
To provide participants from Detroit and surrounding areas and opportunity of involvement in projects beyond the traditional Detroit automotive industry
To improve the student's oral and written technical communication skills,
To improve the student's teamwork and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary environment,
To provide the department and faculty involved with valuable experience in incorporating undergraduate students into research programs.
Timeline and Activities
Applications should be submitted by March 1, 2026 for full consideration. The summer program will run May 18 – July 24, 2026 on the Oakland University campus in Rochester, Michigan. During this period, participants will work full-time with mentors on selected projects. On-campus housing will be proved for national participants. Local participants may commute.
During the 10 week program, meetings for all participants will be held on a weekly basis to exchange ideas, report on progress, and to socialize with faculty and industry mentors. Halfway through the program, presentation on progress and status will be given by participants. Throughout this program, several surrounding industries and research labs will be visited. By the end of the program, participants will have developed a written document of their results and present these in an on-campus conference that will be open to the public. Other summer research programs running in parallel at Oakland University will also be part of this conference. Promising results will be sponsored for submission to professional conferences and journals.
