Kindergarten

In kindergarten music, students learn how to become tuneful, beatful and artful musicians. A student who is tuneful can match pitch and sing with a pleasing tone quality. A student who is beatful can perform the beat when singing, playing an instrument, and moving to music. A student who is artful can perform music expressively, can respond to the meaning of music, and can make connections between music, the world, and his or his own life.

Students achieve this through:

    • Pitch Exploration – Students will explore the various sounds their voices can produce.

    • Song Fragments – Students will echo sing after the teacher.

    • Simple Songs – Students will sing songs that include a limited vocal range and rhythms.

    • Arioso Land – Students will enter a music land where only singing voices are used!

    • Movement Exploration – Students will move through space in various ways while responding to music.

    • Movement for Form and Expression – Students will move to show the feelings and sections in a song.

    • Fingerplays and Action Songs – Students will act out songs with their hands and move to songs with their bodies.

    • Circle Games – Students will play singing games while sitting and moving in a circle.

    • Beat Motions – Students will pat the beat while singing songs and rhymes.

Music Literacy Goals

Students will be able to create, perform, respond to, and connect to music regarding the following concepts:

    • Loud and soft dynamics

    • Fast and slow tempi

    • High and low pitches

    • Steady Beat

    • Rhythm

Ask Me Sheets

Each week, students will bring home an “Ask Me” sheet so they can share our music friends and families! Please “ask” your child to sing the song or explain the music concept. If you save the “Ask Me” sheets in a folder, your child will have a collection of songs and ideas from music class this year!
