Ensembles
Concert Band
Concert Band is LBMS's primary performing ensemble. The Concert Band rehearses during the school day. This ensemble learns a varied collection of Concert literature from September through May, and Marching repertoire and skills in May and June. In all grades, students learn and practice professional rehearsal technique and behaviors. This ranges from the following of visual cues to the practice displayed on stage in performance. Students study a variety of repertoire that spans time periods and cultures. Through this, connections are made between subjects and to novelty music techniques and skills.
The objectives of the Concert Band curriculum are focused on District, State, and National Music Standards:
Reading & Notation
Playing Instruments
Critical Response
Purposes and Meanings in the Arts
Concepts of Style, Stylistic Influence, and Stylistic Change
Interdisciplinary Connections
In connection with the National Standards, students will consistently demonstrate the ability to Create, Perform, and Respond to music.
Across 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, a Concert Band student will progress through leveled Concert Band repertoire. This provides students with the foundation for ensemble performance that they need in order to continue in band through high school and beyond.
Concert Band students perform in four annually occurring events: Nashoba Band Day, Winter Concert, Spring Concert, and the Memorial Day Parade. There are also special performance opportunities each year. Please see the Performance Calendar for an updated list of events.
Chorus
Wednesdays, 2:15-3:20
"If you can speak you can sing; if you can walk you can dance."
-Zimbabwean Shona proverb
Chorus is a place for students to come together, sing, laugh, and enjoy choral community. Chorus is NOT auditioned!! Students with or without singing experience are welcome and encouraged to give it a try! It is especially encouraged that students interested in auditioning for Drama in the winter join Chorus to develop their singing skills.
The LBMS Chorus explores repertoire from a variety of genres including jazz, folk, classical, musical theatre, and even pop! Students learn about vocal health, technique, 2-4 part singing, and experience singing in English and other languages.
Chorus students perform in two annually occurring events: Winter Concert & Spring Concert. There are also special performance opportunities from year to year. Please see the Performance Calendar for an updated list of events.
Jazz Ensemble
Tuesdays, 2:15-3:20
In Jazz Ensemble, students have the opportunity to explore one of the only styles of music that is uniquely American. The ensemble sets up as a traditional "Big Band," but is open to students who play nontraditional jazz instruments as well. Students study a mix of well-known charts, improvisation, jazz technique, and tunes arranged for Big Bands. Jazz Ensemble is open to any student who plays an instrument at 6th grade proficiency.
Jazz Ensemble students perform in two annually occurring events: Winter Concert & Spring Concert. There are also special performance opportunities from year to year. Please see the Performance Calendar for an updated list of events.
Wind Ensemble
Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30
Wind Ensemble is Lancaster's HONORS ensemble. Students in this ensemble are active members of their grade level Concert Band and are driven, high-achieving in music, and seeking a challenge. The Wind Ensemble is our only auditioned ensemble. Students should audition based on their own desire to push themselves and challenge their musical skills. Wind Ensemble aims to have an ideal instrumental balance. This is based on traditional Wind Ensemble section structure. Remaining open seats will be filled based on director recommendation, following auditions.
Students in grades 6-8 Concert Band at LBMS are eligible to audition for the Wind Ensemble
