General Course Description:

Adobe Visual Design: Foundations of Design and Print Production

ADOBE VISUAL DESIGN is a project-based course that develops ICT, career, and communication skills in print and graphic design using Adobe tools. This course is aligned to Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator ACA certification. English language arts are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include job shadowing. Apprenticeship and cooperative education are possible for this course. SkillsUSA competitive events, community service through NTHS, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences.

Adobe Visual Design develops four key skill areas:

• Design

• Research and communication

• Project management and collaboration

• Professional digital photography, illustration, and page layout using Adobe tools

Students develop key skills in a spiral – each project adds more challenging skills to the foundation proficiencies. Students experience subject area skills across careers in digital and graphic design, illustration, photography, print and digital media production.

This content prepares students for the following (ACA) Adobe Certified Associate exams:

• Visual Communication using Adobe Photoshop

• Graphic Design and Illustration using Adobe Illustrator

• Print & Digital Media Publication using Adobe InDesign

The ACA is a nationally recognized certification towards this CTE career pathway.

OBJECTIVES:

• Identify and learn hardware and software needed for various digital techniques.

• Layout, design and production of a variety of Adobe applications using appropriate software.

• Learn and use principles and elements of design (PEDs) to evaluate and create digital related products.

• Evaluate how audience/consumer affects design and presentation.

• Design concepts, storyboarding and group discussions, meeting requirements of the customer/client

Projects include: Advertisements; Collages: Logos; Newsletters; Photo Manipulation Techniques; Portfolios; Stationary Package. All projects include some form of math and writing application skills as required by the CTE course curriculum.

Adobe Digital Design: Foundations of Web Design (Spring 2021)

Digital Design: Foundations of Web Design is a project-based curriculum that teaches digital communication skills in the context of the professional web design and development process, using Adobe web tools.

Digital Design develops four key skill areas:

• Project management and collaboration

• Design

• Research and communication

• Professional web-authoring tools

Students develop these key skills in a spiral — each project adds more challenging skills onto the foundation proficiencies. Digital Design addresses each of these areas, using a project-based approach. Each project has phases that follow a design and development process, from project planning to evaluation and launch.

This content prepares students for the following (ACA) Adobe Certified Associate exams:

• Visual Communication using Adobe Photoshop

• Graphic Design and Illustration using Adobe Illustrator

• Print & Digital Media Publication using Adobe InDesign

The ACA is a nationally recognized certification towards this CTE career pathway.

OBJECTIVES:

• Simulate a professional work environment

• Gradually migrate design work from an individual process to a group process.

• Projects contain activities that require evaluating and redesign and rework communications.

• Develop concepts and principles for effective design.

Projects include:

Emojis, Web and Design Planning, Web development/deployment, Portfolios, Interactive, Digital Narratives,

and Mobile Apps

CLASSROOM, HYBRID, REMOTE EXPECTATIONS

Attendance: Students are expected to be in class everyday and on time to facilitate the learning process. When a student is absent he/she is responsible for approaching the teacher for their make-up work. Skipping class is absolutely unacceptable!

Class work: Class work assignments are a vital part of each class lesson. Students are responsible for completing assignments on time and submitted by the given deadline. If a project is not submitted, there will be an opportunity prior to reports to make-up and submit missing assignment, tests and quizzes, with the exception of unforeseen circumstances. I expect you to make your absolute best effort.

Please do not submit junk work.

Homework Policy: Students are required to review the lesson/vocabulary daily. Quizzes, tests and Midterms will be announced. All vocabulary can be found on Canvas, www.quizlet.com/wturrentine. We are also using the MSi Learning Platform to guide and practice content throughout the semester. No EXCUSES!!

Classroom Norms and Behavior:

Each student is expected to behave with great respect and courtesy in the classroom in dealing with the equipment and each other. Students are expected to follow NHHS school-based rules and code of conduct.

The classroom norms are:

• Be on time, class starts on time (virtually or in person)

Respect everyone including yourself (Digital Citizenship)

• You are your own responsibility

• Be courteous with your language

• Be prepared for class

• *Food and Drink of any kind ARE NOT PERMITTED in the Computer Lab.

Electronic Devices

During the Remote Learning Session, please refrain from using your cell phones or having any other electronic devices on, during your Zoom Class sessions. *As a way to keep the peace and not loose your signal, I encourage you to plug in your device during class time. Please REFRAIN from using any electronic devices other than your assigned computer. All other electronic devices must be off before the start of class. If your device is taken during class, you will need to retrieve it from Dr. Morgan.

Technology

*The technology in this class is at your disposal. Abuse the privileges and you will be removed from the program. Professional programs you will be using are from the Adobe Creative Suite Creative Cloud, they include: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Dreamweaver (level II). The products that you will experience are industry standard programs. Be prepared to work hard and have fun. With your help this can be a great semester!

• GMETRIX Practice Test Software

• MSi Software (Browser simulated software)


If you need a CTE/Adobe software laptop during the spring semester,

please contact AP Mr. May as soon as possible.

*Computers

• Each student will be assigned to a computer. Your user name/password will be discussed during the first day of class.

• Seats may not be changed once the course starts.

• You will be saving all your work on the computer in your account. No other student has access to the account.

• The computers in this lab are very expensive pieces of equipment. They are to be treated respectfully and gently.

• You BREAK IT, YOU BUY IT!

• DO NOT SHARE YOUR PASSWORD OR FILES, this is considered a form of cheating.

Content Concentration and Assessment:

Each quarter, the content of software applications will be taught accordingly throughout the school year, depending upon your class level. Assessments will be taken in the form of quizzes, projects, *ACA exams. Projects will be assigned that must incorporate the tasks that were learned. A rubric will be provided for grading of projects.

New this year, the NC Department of Instruction will replace the EOC with the ACA (Adobe Certified Associate) exam in it's place. You will be required to achieve proficiency status for this course by passing all three applications taught in this curriculum.

Deadlines

Due to extensive course content and tight semester schedule, all deadlines should be met.

Assessment/Grading Policy

Coursework will be graded (subject to change) as follows: Basic Visual Design Rubric. Daily and weekly Quizzes, Midterm, ACAs combined with a practicum (techniques project). There are no senior exemptions.

Resources

All content can be located online such as handouts, projects, vocabulary and QODs through Canvas, Kahoot It, Quizlet, Resource section of teacher web page and Canvas. You may print them out at your expense if needed.

Supplies REQUIRED for class

• Pencils or Pens: You are expected to have a pencil for sketches/concepts.

• Folder for notes.
