The Geometry of Nature- This would be an exploration looking at the shape and structures that occur in nature. Why and how is a spider web 1000 x stronger than steel. How does the shape of the Fire Ant torso allow it to build ant rafts and survive even the more turbulent flooding as intact colonies? All around us there are examples of extremely precise geometry and shapes that occur in nature. While the assumption is that natural means infinite variations and difference (ie.. no two snowflakes alike, no two sand crystals etc....) there are actually very defined and precise shapes all around us if we know how to see and find them. This would be a series of PP presentations introducing some amazing natural "phenomena" followed up by learning how to draw specific complex geometric patterns. The students will work on the drawings for the final 2 classes.
