New Hanover County School's Deaf and Hard of Hearing Department offers two main modes of service delivery for students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Our Maximum Service Program is designed for students aged Kindergarten through 5th grade with Deafness or Hearing Impaired as their primary disability and with significant special education needs as identified by his or her IEP team. This program offers a licensed and specialized teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing available all day for instruction in language, self advocacy, reading, writing, and mathematics. This program also offers students the ability to socialize with other Deaf and Hard of Hearing peers. If an IEP team determines a student has needs that would be best served at the program school, NHCS will contact parents with further details regarding placement. Our program school is housed at Forest Hills Global Elementary School. If you have any further questions regarding our maximum service program, please contact Mary Harker at mary.harker@nhcs.net.
Itinerant services are also available to our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. Itinerant services are provided by a licensed teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to students of all grade levels from preschool to 12th grade. This teacher travels to each student's school to provide Deaf and Hard of Hearing services that address IEP goals ranging from listening/language to self advocacy. Itinerant DHH services do not address academic special education needs as those are provided by the special education teachers at your child's school. If you have any further questions regarding our itinerant services, please contact Christel Williams at christel.williams@nhcs.net.
