Sea Level Rise Role Playing Game (click to access the lesson) - GTM Research Reserve
Student Objectives:
Students will:
work collaboratively to develop a sea level rise plan for a proposed community
understand the difference between mitigation and adaptation
work within budgetary constraints
Time: 40 minutes + 10 minutes post-evaluations and discussions
Grade Level(s): 5th+
Vocabulary:
Adaptation - Taking actions to avoid, benefit from, or deal with current and future climate change. Adaptation can take place in advance (by planning before an impact occurs) or in response to changes that are already occurring.
Community - a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common
Mitigation - the action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or painfulness of something
Sea Level Rise - The rise in sea levels is linked to three primary factors, all induced by this ongoing global climate change: Thermal expansion, Melting of glaciers and polar ice caps, ice loss from Greenland and West Antarctica
Materials:
Map: Areas with 3 feet sea level rise
Map: Where strategies may need to be used
Timer (cell phone)
Pens and small notepads
Small calculators (cell phone)
Description: Groups of five (ideally) will work together to develop a sea level rise plan for a community facing the effects of sea level rise. Students must stay within a given budget and plan accordingly for a 20 year time-frame.
Ideal modification:
Time spent on this lesson can be expanded on how intense you want to make it. We had students work ~60 minutes for four days and then give a final presentation on the 5th day (10 minutes).
