“The Great Stink” and “Toilets of the Future” April 2020

We will be working with the story “The Great Stink” from the April 2020 Scope magazine this week. You will need to login to the online Scope magazine. Here is the link: Scope Magazine Click on “I am a Student.” Our classroom password is miners19. Once you are in, click on the April 2020 edition (the cover has a water background with a sea turtle in the center). After you click on the April edition, all of the stories will appear below. Click on “The Great Stink”.

"The Great Stink" Vocabulary

You can also have the vocabulary read to you. You will find it on the left side of the story towards the bottom.

Read/listen to the story. There are two different options to view/read the story. You can keep the screen as it is when you click on the story, or you can scroll down a little and on the left side there is a “Presentation View” with “Read the Article” right below it. If you click here, it will open a new tab, and the article will look just like the magazine. There are also two options to listen to the story. The first is under the article heading and says “Want to hear this story read aloud? Click here!” The other option is on the left side of your screen and says “Text-to-Speech.” This option will highlight each word as the story is read.

Assignment #4: “Should the School Day Be Longer?”

    1. Read "Should the School Day Be Longer? (Scholastic SCOPE password: miners19)

    2. Find three pieces of text evidence that support “Yes. What a Genius Idea.” You will need to put these in the document in Google Classroom. (Hint: The article has one already done for you -- YES, you may use that one.)

    3. Find three pieces of text evidence that support “No. What a Terrible Idea,” and put them in your document.

    4. What do you think? Should the School Day Be Longer? You need to decide if you agree with the “Yes” side or the “No” side. You will need to write a paragraph stating your opinion. (Think of this as a constructed response question.) You will start the paragraph with your claim (for example--The school day should not be longer!). You will need to support your claim with two pieces of text evidence and a commentary for each one (how does that piece of text evidence support your claim). End your paragraph with a conclusion sentence. Your paragraph should have a minimum of six sentences.
