   Master Chief Petty Officer Duane A. Spears

Master Chief Petty Officer Duane A. Spears entered the Naval Service from Gary, Indiana in 1989. He attended recruit training in Great Lakes, Illinois. Upon completion of basic training, he attended mess management specialist “A” school in San Diego, California.  Master Chief Spears’ sea duty assignments include: USS Doyle (FFG 39); Plank Owner USS Roosevelt (DDG 80); USS Underwood (FFG 36), where he deployed to the Fifth Fleet area of operation and advanced to senior chief petty officer. He also served onboard USS The Sullivans (DDG 68), where he deployed to Sixth and Fifth Fleet area of responsibilities and advanced to master chief petty officer. Master Chief Spears’ shore assignments were Naval Support Organization, LaMaddelena, Italy; Naval Hospital Jacksonville, Florida, Naval Support Activity Naples, Italy, and Navy Recruiting District Jacksonville, where he served as recruiter in charge of Navy Recruiting Station Saint Augustine, Florida and Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois where he pushed Three Divisions and served as Battle Stations-21, leading chief petty officer earning his master training specialist designation.  In February 2014, Master Chief Spears was selected for the command master chief program.  He is a graduate of the Navy senior enlisted academy residents course (Class 138) and the command master chief/chief of the boat command leadership course (Class 135). He earned his associates degree in supervision and management from Coastline Community College in 2012.  Master Chief Spears retired from active duty June 10, 2016 as the Command Master Chief of Navy Recruiting District Philadelphia.  Master Chief Spears’ personal decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Gold Star in lieu of Third Award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Gold Star in lieu of Tenth Award) and various other unit and campaign awards. Master Chief Spears is married to the former Mrs. Latonya McDaniel and has two beautiful children, Duane Jr. and Lexus Spears.

GYSGT Hanson, originally from Wausau, Florida, enlisted in the Marine Corps in April 1984 and received basic training at Maine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon graduation he reported to Naval Air Station (NAS) Millington,Tennessee for training as a Jet Engine Mechanic. After completion of his training, he received orders to report for duty at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort, South Carolina as a Plane Captain on the F-4 Phantom aircraft with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 451. In 1986 after returning from a Western Pacific (WESPAC) tour to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan and other Asian countries. He then reported to MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina where he served as a Rifle Coach. In 1988 GYSGT Hanson re-enlisted and received orders back to (MCAS) Beaufort, South Carolina. There he began his tour of duty as a Plane Captain/Powerplant Mechanic with squadron VMFA- 312 attached to Marine Air Group (MAG) 31. GYSGT Hanson completed another WESTPAC tour and several deployments stateside, along with one North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) exercise to Boda, Norway. When his tour of duty with VMFA-312 had ended in 1992 he re-enlisted and was directed to attend Drill Instructor School at (MCRD), Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon graduation GYSGT Hanson was assigned to Third Recruit Training Battalion, at Paris Island. During his tour as a Drill Instructor GYSGT Hanson worked seven platoons, and one as a Senior Drill Instructor. In August 1994 he was ordered to MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina, once again. He served as the Non-Commission Officer In Charge (NCOIC) for the PowerLine shop with VMFA-122, where he deployed twice on a WESTPAC tour. After re-enlisting in 1996, he returned home after the second WESTPAC tour with orders to report for duty at NAS Pensacola, Florida. There he served as an Instructor at Marine Aviation Training Support Group (MATSG) 21. GYSGT Hanson re-enlisted in January of 2000 and served two more years at MATSG 21 ending his four year tour. He then received orders in November 2001 to report to Naval Air School Command (NASC) for duty as a Drill Instructor at Officer Candidate School (OCS) at NAS Pensacola, Florida. Upon completion of his tour at OCS GYSGT Hanson put in for retirement and left active duty Marine Corps ranks to teach at Allen D. Nease High School as an Instructor for the Navy Junior Officer Cadet Corps program. GYSGT Hanson is married to the former Katherine Michelle Cox and he has four children Mindy, Megan, Chance and Kaytie. GYSGT Hanson's awards include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (5th award), the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon (4th award), Good Conduct Medal (5th award), National Defense Medal (2nd award), Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (4th award), and the Drill Instructor Ribbon (2nd award).
