New Albany Theatre Boosters

Who are the New Albany Theatre Boosters?

The New Albany Theatre Boosters is a parent / guardian-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was established in 2010 to support the innovative work of the New Albany High School Theatre Department. The purpose of the Boosters “is to provide support to the students enrolled or participating in the various Theatre Programs of…New Albany High School to further the education, participation, enjoyment, and appreciation of the theatrical arts.” (Boosters Bylaws, Article II).

What do the Boosters do?

The Boosters provides volunteers for all productions and events; supplies snacks for the cast, crew, and production staff during tech week and performances; markets the productions via social media and through traditional outlets (posters, word-of-mouth); decorates the Hinson Amphitheater or McCoy Center lobby for performances; holds fundraisers; sells ads for and develops the playbill; runs the concessions stand during productions and other events; purchases extra costume pieces and props as needed; procures special effects as needed for productions; and honors senior students and alumni – just to name a few things.

Who are members of the Boosters?

Membership in the Boosters is automatic for all families and alumni who are interested in supporting the New Albany High School Theatre Department.

How are the Boosters funded?

The Boosters are funded through cast and crew production fees, donations, playbill ads, fundraisers, and grants. Ticket sales from high school productions do not fund the Boosters – ticket sale proceeds go into a school activity fund. The school activity fund pays for such items as performance rights for each production (which is costly), set construction materials, printing and publicity costs, guest designers (costumers, set designers), rental fees, and equipment.

What is the structure of the Boosters?

The Boosters are managed by a Board of Directors, which meets once per month. (Boosters Bylaws, Article IV). The Board is elected in May of each year, with special elections held as needed. (Boosters Bylaws, Article VII, Section 2). The Board of Directors is comprised of the following officers:

The Board oversees many committees, which help with the various activities throughout the year. The Boosters’ goal is to have a diverse set of parents representing all classes (9th-12th grade) that serve on the Board and committees. The diverse representation provides different perspectives on student and program needs.  Representation from all grades also establishes a succession plan, which provides the Boosters with continuity because students (and their parents) graduate from the program.

How can I get involved?

There are many ways to get involved.  Board Elections occur annually at the May Boosters Board meeting. Those Board members will begin searching for committee chairs and committee members–both are great ways to get involved with the program. The Boosters have openings for every level of assistance, so they can easily find a fit for your talents and schedule. If you have a special skill set that you would like to share with the Boosters that is not captured within the committee list, please talk with one of the Board members.

About the NAHS Theatre Department

Every year, the Theatre Department produces three full-length theatrical performances as well as their 24 Hour Theatre project and a year-end Showcase. These productions involve over 100 students in the cast, on crew, and in the pit orchestra for the musical. Performers are rigorously trained in acting and vocal techniques, and dance / movement. Students on crew assistant direct; build and paint sets; help with costumes and props; run lighting, projections, and sound; stage manage; and work backstage during performances.

The NAHS Theatre Department is a nationally recognized program. Its novel Robot Theatre program was featured in The New York Times, Dramatics magazine, and The Columbus Dispatch. Its production of The Laramie Project Cycle, which included both The Laramie Project and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, was profiled in Ohio Schools magazine and in the Outlook Ohio magazine. Two of its productions, The Diary of Anne Frank in 2007 and The Crucible in 2014, were selected to perform at the Ohio Educational Theatre Association's annual State Thespian Conference.

The NAHS Theatre Department has received international recognition for its continued excellence in the theatrical arts, performing its production of The Comedy of Errors at the 2014 American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF) and its production of PIPPIN at the 2019 AHSTF. Held annually in Edinburgh, Scotland during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world's largest performing arts festival, AHSTF is a life-changing experience for students that profoundly influences their growth and development in a positive way when they realize their goal of performing a production on an international stage.

All of the honors the program has received would not have been possible without the support of the New Albany Theatre Boosters and our generous community.

Recent productions of the NAHS Theatre Department include: The Little Mermaid, Letters to Sala, Something Rotten!, Mamma Mia!, Clue: On Stage, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mean Girls: High School Version, PUFFS, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic, and All Shook Up: School Edition. Their 2024 - 2025 season will open with A Chorus Line: School Edition in November, followed by Little Women in April, and Shakespeare in Love: High School Edition next summer.
