Unit 4: Chemical Nomenclature

In this unit, the focus will be on naming and writing formulas for ionic compounds, molecular compounds, acids and bases. This unit will also focus on ion formation and the laws of definite and multiple proportions.

Enduring Understandings

Students will understand that:

  • the periodic table can be used to identify ion charges
  • there are rules to follow for naming compounds
  • there are two laws of nature governing the writing of formulas and word names for compounds

Essential Questions

  • Why can't all compounds be named the same way?
  • How can the periodic table be used when naming and writing formulas?
