On April 28, 2022, Dr. Grace Yan successfully hosted the Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation Symposium (Wind Hazard): From Challenge to Opportunity. The increasing number of “billion-dollar” weather and climate events shows that the United States is facing a rapidly changing hazard and risk environment, which is mainly, but not exclusively, caused by climate change, based on the recently released IPCC 2022 report. This symposium brought together leaders from five universities, three national labs, NSF, two government agencies and nonprofit organizations to identify new challenges in hazard mitigation under the changing climate and to convert these challenges into opportunities to make significant leaps in disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
