7th Grade

Dear Seventh Graders & Families,

Welcome to social studies! This year you will investigate local, national, and global issues from the perspective of a geographer. Geographers study Earth’s physical features, human activity on Earth, and how the two affect each other. Geographers love to ask questions: How will the Earth sustain a world population of 10 billion people? What impact does immigration have on a country? What should be done about pollution? If world agriculture is capable of providing everyone on Earth with enough food, then why do 800 million people go to bed hungry every night? Geographers seek to understand local, national, and global issues and find solutions. Likewise, they seek to make informed judgements and become active citizens. If any of these notions grab your attention, then you are in the right place!

Welcome!

Carrie Luce

Units of Study

We will travel the globe in world geography, this year. We will begin the year with an Introduction to Geography unit, followed by a unit on Maine, the United States, Canada, and Latin America. A syllabus will be given at the beginning of every unit, containing our learning objectives and a unit overview. Each unit will include vocabulary quizzes, map tests, constructed responses, a unit test and a hands-on project.

Community

Each year, I pride myself in creating a classroom family; bringing students together in a meaningful and supportive way is one of my strengths as an educator. This year, you will spend a significant portion of your waking hours (during the week) on this team, with this group of people. In order for each member of the team to feel “plugged-in,” it is of paramount importance that you:

· Treat others the way you want to be treated.

· Do your best work and encourage those around you to do the same.

· Let everyone learn.

It's going to be a great year! I look forward to working with you.
