Counselor's Corner

MHS School Counseling Program Mission Statement:

The mission of MHS's School Counseling Program is to promote and enhance the continuous improvement of student achievement through academic, social/emotional, and post-secondary/career development.

The primary role of the counseling department is to advocate for students while working in partnership with educators, parents, and community members. The counseling office encourages: self-awareness, independence, uniqueness, and personal worth of all students.  It is our goal to maximize the knowledge and skills the students will need in order to achieve their personal goals and to help them become successful, competent adults.

About Me:
Hello, my name is Julie Churchill and I am excited to be the new school counselor at Morrison High School! A little about my background: I grew up in Lake Villa, IL (near Gurnee, IL) and graduated high school from Lakes Community High School. I then graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL in 2011 with my Bachelor's in K-12 Spanish Education, and most recently from Western Illinois University-Quad Cities in Moline, IL in 2016 with my Master's in School Counseling. I completed my internship in the Rock Island School District during the 2015-2016 school year.

As a school counselor, I am able to help students with a variety of things falling under the three main categories: academic, college and career readiness, and social/emotional. If I am unable to help a student with a particular issue, then I am able to refer them to outside resources. Some specific things that I am able to help with is:

-Promoting positive attitudes among students towards self, family, peers, and community.

-Assisting students in learning how school performance relates to future opportunities.

-Working with students, parents, and school staff to identify learning needs and to design interventions to enhance student success.

-Helping students to recognize and make the best of their abilities.

-Providing support during a personal crisis.

-Helping to create a safe and positive learning experience.

-Supporting and guiding students in becoming mature and successful adults in life.

I understand that growing up isn't easy! It is my job as a school counselor to help young adults through the tough times and support them when needed. First and foremost I am a student advocate, so please don't hesitate to reach out to me!
