CAPTAIN CHARLES M. GIBSON

UNITED STATES NAVY

  Captain Gibson graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and was commissioned through the University of North Carolina NROTC program.  In October 1986, he was designated a Naval Flight Officer and was assigned to VAQ-129 for initial fleet replacement training as an Electronic Countermeasures Officer in the EA6B.

  In October 1987, he reported to VAQ-136 onboard USS MIDWAY (CV-41) forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan.  During this tour, he completed two deployments to the North Arabian Sea and served as the Schedules Officer, Training Officer, and Aircraft Division Officer.

   Captain Gibson was selected for the NFO to Pilot program in October 1989.  He completed pilot flight training with VT-2, VT-23, and VT-22 and was designated a Naval Aviator on 03 April 1992.  Returning to Whidbey Island in May 1992, he completed training at VAQ-129 and reported to VAQ-132 in June 1993.  During his tour with the "Scorpions", he deployed aboard the USS SARATOGA (CV-60) to the Mediterranean Sea flying missions supporting Operations DENY FLIGHT and PROVIDE PROMISE while serving as Administrative Officer, Plans and Tactics Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer.  In January 1995, Captain Gibson volunteered to augment VAQ-130 during their deployment to the Mediterranean aboard the USS EISENHOWER (CVN-69).  While assigned to the "Zappers," he served as Assistant Operations Officer.

  In October 1995, Captain Gibson reported to VAQ-141 for his Department Head tour, serving as Safety Officer, Electronic Warfare Officer and Maintenance Officer.  With the "Shadowhawks," he deployed to the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf aboard the USS J. F. KENNEDY (CV-67) in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH, and was designated a CVW-8 Air Wing Strike Leader.

  From March 1998 to March 2001, Captain Gibson served as the EA6B readiness officer as Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, VA.  He then attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island from March 2001 until March 2002, graduating with a Masters Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.  In April 2002, he reported to VAQ-129 for refresher training.  In March 2003 Captain Gibson reported to VAQ-133 as the Executive Officer.

   In June 2004, he assumed command of VAQ-133 and lead the squadron through a six-month deployment to Bagram Air base, Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. 

  Following his change of command in September 2005, CAPT Gibson reported to the National Airborne Operations Center (NAOC) at Offutt AFB, NE.  Flying aboard the E-4B, he served as the Combat Center Operations Chief for Operations Team Three.  Captain Gibson then served as the NAOC Operations Officer.

   In August 2008, he assumed command of NAS Meridian, where he also served as a T-45C flight instructor.  Following his change of command in August 2011, CAPT Gibson reported to JFCC Global Strike as the Director of Operations.  As Director, he fulfilled a critical role in the command and control of the nation’s nuclear forces. 

   In August 2013, CAPT retired from Naval service, and is currently employed as the Senior Naval Science Instructor at the Mooresville Senior High School NJROTC program.
