What do I need to know to be successful in 8th Grade ELA?
All classes are expected to complete reading outside of class. Students should not be completing hours of homework for ELA each week. Parents, if you find that your child is spending a lot of time on assignments outside of class, please have a conversation with your child about utilizing his or her class time wisely.
Tests (CFAs, or Common Formative Assessments) are given approximately 3 times a quarter. The work is challenging. This is done deliberately to set children up for success on the EOG. There will be an opportunity to make test corrections to learn from mistakes made. Half credit can be earned back for test corrections that are completed accurately and thoroughly. These are completed in class.
Benchmarks are given at the end of the first three quarters. These are comprehensive exams that are like mock EOGs. Students will be assessed on an array of passages. These are similar to the Benchmarks from 7th Grade. The grades are not curved, but students will be allowed to complete test corrections to earn up to half credit back.
Cell phones should be off and away. They should not be visible.
You will never be allowed to listen to music in class. The main focus of ELA is reading comprehension. In order to process the information that you are reading, music needs to be off. Ear buds/headphones should not be out/ around your neck/wrapped around your ears, etc.
