Family Game Night!
Chat Time!
Games are a great way to develop language skills and social skills. While playing board games and card games, children learn to take turns, negotiate conflict, explain their reasoning, and think critically. As an added bonus, children and parents alike can have fun together!
Here is a list of some games for promoting language and critical thinking development:
Apples to Apples
Scrabble
Monopoly
Hedbanz
Guess Who
Guess What I am
Charades
Memory
Uno
Chutes and Ladders
Checkers
Chess
Our children have so much to say, and they want to be heard! Make sure that your child knows how interested you are in what he has to say. Set aside a time of day when your child has your undivided attention, perhaps at dinner time or while having an after school snack. Talk about your day and encourage him to share about his day. Try to avoid questions, such as "How was your day?" or "Did you have a good day?" because your child can respond with a one word answer, and then the conversation may be over. Make statements, such as "Tell me about recess," or "Tell be about the best part of your day."
Think about other good conversation topics. You may want to create a Conversation Jar, in which your write ideas of questions or topics on pieces of paper. Put all of the pieces of papers in a jar, and then every evening pick one out to talk about. For example, "If you won $1000 what would you do with it," "Would you rather play inside or outside and why." "What is your favorite season and why?"
