******AR Start Date—August 31, 2015******
South Hill Elementary Accelerated Reader Goals & Rewards
All students (grades 1-5) participating in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program will be recognized as they reach point goals with 85% accuracy. There is no limit to the highest point club that can be reached.
Each nine weeks, students will be invited to participate in a special recognition activity if they have reached a new point club for their grade. Example: A first grader who has met 3 points with 85% accuracy by the end of the first 9 weeks, will be invited to the special activity. A third grader who has met 10 points with 85% accuracy by the end of the first 9 weeks, will be invited to the special activity. (Homeroom teachers may recognize students in addition to the grade level activity within their classrooms as they wish.
There will be an end of year celebration and a certificate of achievement for students who have met the End of Year Celebration requirements for their respective grades. You will notice that some grades require more points to attend the End of Year Celebration. This is due to time constraints in the schedules of grades 3-5. The goals by grade are as follows:
1st 9 weeks 2nd 9 weeks 3rd 9 weeks 4th 9 weeks End of Year Celebration
1st grade 3 5 5 5 25
2nd grade 10 10 10 10 50
3rd grade 10 10 10 10 40
4th grade 10 10 10 10 40
5th grade 10 10 10 10 40
The student with the highest number of points with 85% accuracy or higher, for each grade, will be recognized at the end of the year Awards Assembly. The three top readers in grades 1-2 and the three top readers in grades 3-5 will also be recognized at the end of the year Awards Assembly.

South Hill Elementary Accelerated Reader Guidelines
The primary purpose of the Accelerated Reader program is to encourage students to read and develop lifelong reading habits. The program has been proven to improve reading comprehension skills in students participating fully in the program.
· Students must read and answer test questions independently without adult or peer intervention unless specified by accommodations on a 504 or IEP.
· No movie viewing may be substituted for reading a book.
· Most points should be earned from books that students have read independently. Students may also test on books used as a “Read Aloud” by a teacher.
· During homeroom, students may test in their homeroom classrooms or a supervised computer lab. When classes are in the library, students will be offered an opportunity to take a quiz as well. Classroom teachers will offer students opportunity to take quizzes in the classroom during the day at times determined by the individual teachers.
· No students may test under parent supervision at any time.
· Students may only test during the school day between the hours of 8:30-3:30.
· Parents are encouraged to check their child’s progress by logging on directly to RenPlace.
· Teachers should frequently review student progress by checking the Class Summary Report.
· Please encourage student to read books within their reading range, but DO NOT limit them to that range.
· Per administration, AR practice quizzes are NOT to be used as a grade.
· Be sure to close out the program completely when not testing. Failure to do so may cause data to be lost.
· In order to accommodate those students with ESL, IEPs, or 504 read aloud accommodations, these students may use the read aloud feature. If needed, Case Managers should notify database manager. Points can also be adjusted for special circumstances for these students with committee approval.
· BOOKS MUST BE CLOSED DURING AN AR TEST!
· STUDENTS SHOULD NEVER TAKE A QUIZ FOR SOMEONE ELSE.
· STUDENTS CAUGHT CHEATING WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE REWARDS PROGRAM AND ALL POINTS WILL BE ERASED.
