MMA Opportunities

Here is a list of the newest opportunities:

There is a very short window for students to submit to The Young Master Writers & Artists Competition this year.

The deadline for Poster Arts submissions is April 7th, 2024 and the deadline for Poetry & Prose submissions is April 19th, 2024.

To enter a submission for either contest, students will need to submit their entry, a Student Entry Form, a Permission to Publish Form, and a Media Release Form. A Blair teacher will need to submit a Teacher Verification Form on their behalf (see me in 245 if you need help with this).

Here is the website.

It includes all contest rules, Kami links to their own copy of each form, and the Google Form for submitting entries (your teachers should also use this Google form to submit teacher verification forms).

This year, all submissions must connect to one of five themes: Link up the Vote!, Police Reform, Principles of BLM, Prevention of Human Trafficking, and Environmental Justice. Student winners will receive cash prizes (up to $300!) and will move on to the regional contest.

County Sports Zone, a website that values high school sports and reports on high school games daily, is looking for ambassadors on the high school level to put content on its website, which can help student-athletes at your school receive the coverage that they deserve. Ambassadors will take a picture or two of sports games that they would likely be attending anyway and then write a few paragraphs about the game such as score, top players, top scorers, statistics, and any other interesting details. This is a great opportunity for students to get real-life sports reporting experience and it will look great on students' college applications.

Interested students should contact Mira Beinart at mira.beinart@schoolduels.com to get on board.

The Iowa Young Writers’ Studio, a creative writing program for high school students at the University of Iowa, is now accepting applications for our Winter 2024 6-week online courses.

These courses, which are asynchronous, will run from January 21 through March 3, 2024. We offer courses in poetry writing, creative writing, and fiction writing. We’re also offering a new course, Ricochet Visions, on speculative fiction writing.

These courses are a great way for students who are eager for additional creative writing instruction to study with a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, get feedback on their writing, develop their craft, and connect with other high school writers. Students who complete the course will receive a Letter of Completion from the Iowa Young Writers' Studio. (These courses are not offered for college credit).

Students enrolled in high school who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible to take our online courses. We're looking for students who will be enthusiastic and committed to the experience. If you know one, can you pass this information along? There is an online application process.

The deadline to apply for the Winter 2024 courses is October 31, 2023. Students can learn more about each course and find out how to apply on our website. If they have questions, they can email us at iyws@uiowa.edu.
