ABOUT SMS MUSIC

Middle School Music Ensembles provide students with a sequential understanding of the physiological workings of the human voice and/or the human body in reference to playing a musical instrument. Students develop technique, expression and skill through proper instruction, practice, movement, and traditional and nontraditional assessment; they will develop musical knowledge and will use that knowledge to perform, listen to, interpret, appreciate and understand music as an art form. Over five decades of studies tell us that students with musical training score significantly higher on tests, particularly those that measure critical thinking and problem solving; young musicians are much more likely to be successful in high school and college. Middle school music programs encourage students to challenge themselves, belong to a 'family' that provides beneficial and safe, constructive criticism in an effort to improve, and gives an avenue of self-expression. Choir, Band and Orchestra not only teach musical knowledge and growth, but also knowledge of other cultures, new languages, tolerance, self-discipline, life lessons, and hard work. Ensemble classes show students the possibilities of their potential, not only as musicians, but also as important members of society.

Middle School General Music Classes provide students with an understanding of the basics of music theory and performance, how music affects us emotionally and physically, an avenue of self-expression through music as a consumer, knowledge of important advancements in music technology and careers in music, and a basic respect for other cultures and musical traditions. Students will develop this knowledge through class discussion, observation of and listening to musical examples, written work and group projects, and will use this knowledge to create an appreciation and respect for music in any form.
