As representatives of Southern Nazarene University, the SNU School of Education, and the teaching profession, it is important to use good judgment in appearance and behavior. Research has shown that our appearance has a significant effect upon the way we are perceived and upon the impact we have on others. As Teacher Candidates, you should be sure that your appearance communicates to others that you believe school is important, students are important people and that school should be an orderly, productive place. To help you transfer this statement to today’s wardrobe and styles, guidelines have been developed to help in your decision making process.
- Wear clothing that communicates professionalism and respect for the teaching profession
- Wear comfortable shoes (avoid flip-flops)
- Wear attractive slacks – no jeans or shorts
- Wear clothes that have a “traditional” fit (not too baggy or too tight)
- Wear clothes and hairstyles that are fashionable, but not extreme or offensive to others
(i.e. purple hair, multiple piercings, etc.).
- Slacks or skirts with appropriate lengths (no mini skirts)
- No shorts or jeans
- Blouses (no casual t-shirts or midriffs; neckline should be appropriate for teaching)
- Begin the semester more formally (a good first impression goes a long way)
- Shirts with collars (no t-shirts)
- Socks with shoes
- Comfortable slacks (no shorts or jeans)
- Begin the semester more formally (a good first impression goes a long way)
Remember, these are GENERAL guidelines. Field trips and physical education classes, etc.
could possibly have different dress expectations. In those particular settings, it is advisable to
consult the mentor/cooperating teacher for clarification.
ALWAYS REMEMBER TO DRESS PROFESSIONALLY!
