The Center for Gender Equity Education at Shih Hsin University, Taipei, Taiwan

The Center for Gender Equity Education (CGEE) was founded in 2007 within Shih Hsin University. CGEE’s mission is to promote gender equity consciousness and practices in the university setting, as well as in the community at large. Through research and education, CGEE aims to enhance gender awareness among faculty, staff, and students of the university and to provide the appropriate management of sexist and sexual harassment incidents on the campus.

Since its establishment, CGEE has actively participated in national policy making on gender equity education and campus sexual harassment management in Taiwan. CGEE has received several commissions from the Ministry of Education (MOE) that have resulted in the draft Guidelines on Campus Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Management and Prevention, and the White Paper of Gender Equity Education. The Center has also developed and organized training programs and workshops for sexual harassment investigative “pracademics” throughout Taiwan.

As an advocate for gender equity, CGEE has initiated numerous educational activities on campuses, as well as in the neighboring communities. For the past five years, CGEE has sponsored guided seminars on popular films to sensitize gender awareness in the community at large. CGEE also organizes timely lectures and colloquiums on media covered gender-related news to promote gender equity consciousness among the members of the University and the community.

CGEE evolved from Research Institute for Gender and Communications, established in 1997 under the leadership of President Dr. Cathy Chen of the World College of Journalism and Communication, to promote gender related research in communication studies. As the College transformed into Shih Hsin University, the Research Institute also transformed, with the support of then president Dr. Paul Mou, into CEGG in 2007 to promote gender equity in the university and the community.
