BCST 103 - Mass Media & Society

TEXTBOOKS

Mass Communication: Living in a Media World, 8th Edition, by Ralph E. Hanson (2021 Sage Publishing). You must have the 8th edition of the textbook as other versions will not correspond appropriately to course materials, study plan, quizzes and exams.

You may use either a hardcopy or a digital copy of the book. Both are available from the CCSF Bookstore. Digital copies are available for rental from either VitalSource or Redshelf (via the CCSF Bookstore). Hard copies (new or used) are available from the Bookstore or other retailers. Please ensure that you have the 8th edition, and have it by the start of term. Extensions and make ups will not be permitted for failure to have the text when class starts. If you have a financial aid voucher, you can get either the hard copy or a digital access pass for the ebook from the CCSF Bookstore.

SYLLABUS

The syllabus is posted in Canvas for all registered students. If you would like to review it prior to registration/start of class, please email me privately (kbeyer@ccsf.edu).

Enrolled students will receive course instructions and other details via e-mail prior to the start of class. Please make sure your records are correct, and check your spam folders regularly!

COURSE ANNOUNCEMENTS

All work will be done online. There are no on campus or schedule Zoom class meetings. This class was designed to be taught online, and has been delivered online for more than 20 years. It was NOT converted to online delivery because of the pandemic. Because it was always intended for online delivery, it has been structured to allow students to work at their own pace and convenience, with work and deadlines set on a weekly basis.

If you are new to Canvas, you will receive an email on the first day of term with your login instructions and details.
