Events and Opportunities
In each of my lecture classes, students may receive up to 5 points extra credit per exam (a total of 20 points per semester) for participating in some type of environmental service work. You may work with a group (such as the ones listed below) or do something on your own, but you must donate at least 1 hour of your time to receive the maximum 5 points of extra credit. While you are there, take a picture of yourself (cell phone photos are fine) or get something signed by the event organizer to receive credit. You must complete the activity before the exam to receive credit.
San Francisco Chapter of Surfrider (http://sfsurfrider.org/) hosts beach clean-ups regularly.
Neighborhood Parks Council (http://www.sfnpc.org/currentworkdays) hosts work days at parks throughout the City. These may include planting, habitat restoration work, clean-up, or whatever else a specific park needs.
Save the Bay (www.savesfbay.org then volunteer) hosts habitat restoration events at locations throughout the Bay Area.
Friends of the Urban Forest (http://www.fuf.net/) -- plant trees in SF on your own or with a group.
Golden Gate National Parks Volunteer Program (http://www.parksconservancy.org/help/volunteer/) -- hosts events weekly in various parks. Check out the calendar on their website or email volunteer@parkconsergancy.org
San Francisco Recreation and Parks Natural Areas Program - (http://sfnap.org/) has volunteer opportunities most Saturdays and Sundays in local parks.
These are events that I know of, but I'm always looking for more ideas. If you hear of something let me know so I can add it to the list.
